magic to puzzle

Postby bloohairdfreek » Sep 1st, '07, 04:04

hi guys,

i started out about a year ago with card tricks and coin manipulations. i learned a few effects and set up a routine, which i was able to present well enough to disguise the methods and keep my mind off what my hands were doing ie think about my patter mid-effect. unfortunatly i lost the "magic" in my magic somewhere along the line and all im doing now is presenting tricks in a puzzle format. its frustrating especially because i feel that the audience doesnt enjoy the performance as much.

any help on presenting would be greatly apprieciated.

It sounds like your routine has become completely mechanically. Although you have been doing magic for longer then I have an outisders view may be usefull. Possibly take something out of the routine and learn something new and put it in the old tricks place, that is to say, update your routine, spice it up.

I guess the biggest thing is to make it fun (for yourself and for your spectators, because if it's fun for you it should rub off on them)

Also post an intro in the introduction section just saying hi and telling us a bit about you. (even though you have here it is more appropriate to put it there)

Yeah that's what it sounds like to me also. It's just become a series of moves rather than magic.

Don't forget that you're performing for the spectator, not for yourself.

Remove the mechanical side by giving one of your tricks a whole new presentation. Invent a new story, or a theme or something. Rediscover old tricks or invent your own effect.

Or just get back to basics, dig out your old card books. learn some new sleights and increase your arsenal.

I keep quoting this, sorry. Dai Vernon..
If you can't give a trick a new twist, at least try to give it a different patter presentation. Everyone doing magic should endeavor to add some original idea, some thought of your very own to every effect you do.
