Hi guys, I was given this trick years and years ago by a magician that did not know the tricks name....

Basically the effect was-

You ask a spectator for their cig packet or metal foil from the inside of their kitkat or choc bar wrapper...and then you get them to fold it up into quarter and hold it in between their fingers....you concentrate on the piece of papery foil in their hands and within a few seconds the foil becomes so hot they have to drop it....they can then pick it up straight away to see that it is not hot in anyway.....

So anyway, this magician gave me a pot of this stuff that he got years ago and I performed this trick, were I said the spec was hypnotised and they wud feel so much heat they wud have to drop the paper.......Well this trick was great up until the liquid stuff run out.....Now Ive spoken to a Chemistry teacher who was gona give me some kinda acid, but I thought that wud be too dangerous and I didnt want my specs to go home with no fingers......

So what Im really asking is does anyone own, perfom or know wer I can find out/get it from?

Thanks peeps x

It's called mercuric chloride and it's nasty, corrosive stuff.

Wasn't it also sold as "HypnoHeat"?

Good luck finding it though, I've tried and failed.

It's mentioned in McGill's New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism.

Chemicals are hard to get gold of these days but I believe a shop on London called John Bell & Croyden in Wigmore Street stocks chemicals and may have this. That's all I know, but if you manage to find the number give them a call.

I have not been to this shop, but someone told me it may stock some chemicals I need for an effect I want to do.

Yeah, Hypnoheat. There's a reference in McGill's "New Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnotism" but I don't think you can buy it any more.

You might be able to concoct some acid/alkali mix, but that would be quite dangerous too. I gave up chemistry at school for physics, so I'm not really the one to comment. Wouldn't it be easier just to use suggestion for real? You could probably adapt a hand-stuck-to-table routine quite nicely.

Not tried it out but a dab of Deep Heat could possibly work...

You can actually do a similar effect with the paper from a stick of "Big Red" chewing gum (you'll want to put the wrapper on some normal gum first for presentation). If they're friends, lick the paper, if not, put a few spots of water or condensation from a glass onto the non-silver side and get them to stick it to their foreheads. after about 15 second it will get so "hot" that they will have to take it off!

I would use the method farls mentioned. I have a pile of the stuff I bought from the American candy store (you can also get it off the net), as I got excited when I found some near where I live (for those accross the pond, we dont really have the stuff in this country).
I have used it countles times, Usually down the pub, and it works a treat. Though I prefer to use the condensation off a glass. Once your pack is set, you have an 'impromtu' miracle. And its 100% safe.

I wouldnt be suprised if this wasnt a well known thing in the states, and nothing more than a prank of sorts. In this country, the vast majority have never seen the stuff.

I've just been watching Brainiac about how, if your eyes are closed, it's impossible to tell if a fluid poured over your hand is hot or cold, just that it's an extreme of temperature.

I've been thinking...could you not achieve the same effect with simple suggestion?

its like the old "hands in hot water, then in cold" trick, you cant tell the difference after a couple of attempts...

kreskin has an experiment with a thermometer and thankfully, the hands, not the buttocks...

beardy - i doubt you'd be able to do it with suggestion to such extremes...

maybe proper hypnosis (not that i'd know) but with suggestion, unless they are especially prone to it, i wouldnt of thought you could make it chili hot...

Abraxus, Under full trance state I think this could be achived. Hypnosis is the next level if you will so if you make people fall over and lock there hands just using suggestion. The the world is your oyster card in a trance state.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

ah...well i would of defined a full trance state being the same as hypnosis..

suggestion, i would put into the building blocks/jermay style stuff...not the fully under kinda thing...

Yeah, put your hands under an extremely hot tap and it feels the same as freezing water. I have noticed loads of times.
Would have thought I could always tell the difference though

Back on topic, what if someone performs the hot foil trick and wipes their eye? won't it be dangerous?
