Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

To jump into tis interesting discussion. I tend to side with Max Gordon. In that I think a job title (even if it is a pseudo title or made up word) should be included.

My feeling is that it doesn't matter how memorable you were - if the card has lain dormant for awhile a gentle reminder is always going to be useful.

Also, sometimes you don't get a chance to "be memorable". Often I get asked for a card just because I have said I am a magician in passing conversation. I haven't been doing magic so have had little chance to impress with actualities.

So in this case I would say it is essential the card has a little clue as to what you do.

Bananafish... great that you've joined in...

But in 'context', we're talking about using a symbol rather than a phrase...

I think that's an important point to make, one which Max missed as well, it seems.

In everyday terms—yes, use a title. It IS essential. In my case, I don't need a title on my business card as the company name and what we do is listed on there.

But in this instance, what we're saying is that perhaps symbolism will speak as loud or even louder and leave the 'title' more ambiguous.

Ed was looking for re-assurance that his idea of just using imagery was OK, and could happily replace a title. Perhaps you guys missed that part of the post? 8)

No, I didn't miss it.

My point was that I personally believe that having a job title - even if it is a pseudo one or even a made up word is essential.

Well maybe not essential, but very useful and can only help not hinder.

In otherwords I am saying that in my own opinion, I would not just have a symbol.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of using the symobo. I have a very iconic card myself. But I don't think it enough on it's own.

Of course if you are someone like Derren Brown who is already known, or if you aren't that worried about losing the odd gig because they look at your card and don't remember exactly what it's for then - just a symbol is probably ok.

Remember these are just my thoughts. You don't have to agree. But to answer your question. yes, i did read the original post. I apologise if that wasn't clear from my response.

No, I apologise for not apologising for jumping down your throat... it wasn't meant to sound like that.

I see what you mean now!

Slighty on a tangent I know, but subtle 'marks' are allways handy,

I agree with a number of previous posts that clean cards are better than cluttered ones full of names numbers etc. Make it simple is best.

As for a title or handle. If you want something more specialised to mentalism as opposed to magic but don't like the handle of mentalist, how about 'Magic of the Mind' or 'Mind Magic' ??
