Hello from São Paulo, Brazil

Postby Barco » Sep 27th, '07, 20:48

Hello, all. My name is Felipe Barco, or just Barco for Friends. I'm from São Paulo, Brazil, 20 Years Old, and I know very little about magic (In theory, everything is easier).
I've been reading and trying Card tricks for some time, but I seemed just to not be able to do it. So, I decided to gather more, and more information, and get to know and contact other magicians around the world. For this, I gathered an Orkut community here in Brazil focused in Magic, and Joined TM (found it searching for "Impromptu Magic" in Google).
I like every kind of magic, for all of them please me. But I like better the ones I can make with simple things, and with no props, or gimmicks.
Since I can't leard Magic Cards, I've been waiting to meet another Magician in person to have some doubts cleared, and get some tips. So, I've been trying Coins and Sponge Balls. Now, I can't do much, only some appearing, Vanishing, some multiplying. Nothing very big.
I don't know if this happens because I know how a trick is done, but when I practice, I always think I'm being too obvious, maybe exposuring some moves. Thats Why I never tried magic with anyone (except for One Card Trick I can Do fairly well, but what is a magician with only One trick?).
So, Thats all for now. I hope I can find here a new place to discuss magic, and make some good friends around the World.
Sorry for the big post.
Hugs!

Felipe Barco

Hey there Barco, welcome to TM! :D

Where have you been learning card magic from? Mark Wilson's Complete Course and Royal Road to Card Magic are both really good places to start. :D

Hello and welcome,

Reading your introduction sums up how i started. Couldn't do cards, went to coins and worked hard. I felt the same about it feeling obvious for a long time until i took the step after watching myself in the mirror. I tested it on friends and it was their reactions that gave me the much needed confidence to progress.
Funny thing is i've switched to cards recently and found that the results for the practice time are better than it ever was with coins and I'm really enjoying myself.

Have fun

Well... I tried Cards with a Magician's DVD from Brazil, called Felipe Kardman. I didn't know much, and just bought it for fun. So, I started reading Tarbell's Course, and now I'm waiting for Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights.
I found out that a guy who works with me is very into magic as well, and he is giving me some tips. I'm thinking about trying more and more cards... If I could I'd practice ALL kinds of magic, but I guess I have to go one at a time.
With Tarbell's I got something on Coins and Sponge Balls. Watching some routines, I could manage some cool tricks. I also have a copy os Dave Hudspath's Tricks With Sponge balls. Its very simple, very good for those who are beginning and don't know where to Start.
Now, I've been looking to get some Elmsley's, Dai Vernon's, and Ammars videos. I think they are the best ones from where I can learn some basic stuff.
Lady of Mistery, I'll try to follow your tip, and add those to my WishList.
Deshi, I think lacks me confidence, for now, to try it with some friends.
I thank you all for reading and answering. Thanks for the tips. I'll try to follow all of them, and keep practicing.
Once again, thanks.
Hugs!

Hello Barco,

Welcome to TM. I am fairly new to magic too so I could see where you are coming from. I suggest that, in addition to practicing in front of a mirror, you should also tough it out and practice in front of an audience, whether a friend, a family member, whether it is only one person or several. Just don't take it personal if they see how you do a trick for that will actually help you fix your handling. Just have fun with it. A week ago, I showed my brother-in-law a trick (card transpo) and he actually found out how i did it. What I did was figured out a good misdirection and did the same exact trick a couple of days later with the added misdirection and it blew his mind away. I show my girlfriend the same 10 card tricks that I know (poor her) but just because I change up the presentation, she always sees it as a new trick. Getting caught also helps me figure out an "out" for a certain trick. Just see it as a part of the learning curve.

Sargin.Pepper: Thanks for the advice.. I'll try to see what I'm doing best and perform to a couple of friends, or even family. I guess it would help. Every end of year (near Christmas, or Children Holiday), my Yo-Yoing group makes some presentation for poor children. I'd like to add some magic to the presentation. I think it would be cool.
Ham: Thanks! :)

hey Barco you can try and do some cups and balls variations, they arent too hard...I found the classic cups and balls really deceptive and easy to master when i was starting and everyone liked it.
And if you want to learn card magic The Royal Road To Card Magic is the way to go(i have mine for like a year and i still havent learned everything there...)
welcome
