I've been looking a different places to perform magic.
In a fit of self-destructive mania, I told one of the most popular new-act comedy clubs in Brighton that I was keen to try my shtick on a comedy stage.
Silence for a couple of months, then I get an email telling me that there's a ten minute slot available to me if I want it.
That was Friday night. The club was packed, but the audience was surprisingly friendly - I was expecting a room full of sharks sniffing for the scent of blood and panicked thrashing.
I took some standard mentalism routines - Kurotsuke, a swami revelation, and Banacheck's ESP opener (but not with ESP cards) - and dressed them up to make a big play of the absurdity of the situation (just why does a grown man do this stuff?).
It went amazingly well and the audience genuinely seemed to enjoy the act. I've still got a lot to learn about comedy stages, but it's got my mind racing. I've been chewing over an approach to mentalism that would be quite appropriate for comedy stages, and I'm really excited about pursuing it.
Now all I need is a few more hours in the day!
