Re. cosmetics advertisements, what's funny is that you go to somewhere totally different in the world they are selling the same product, with the same "special ingredients", just fitted to your consumer ideals.

So in Europe, laboratoire garnier moisturiser contains natural zinc oxidase and lime essence to make your skin softer and more radiant. However, in Thailand and India, same product, same zinc oxidase, but guess what? Those magical ingredients now make your skin paler!

The scientific break-throughs never cease... geographically sensitive zinc oxidase.

I loved the Mitchell and Webb sketch with the toothbrush people... "no, they'll never fall for it, it's too stupid..."

"No, no, we'll manage it! We'll pull it off. We'll actually get people to brush their tongues."

And that Olay ReGenerist Double Lifting cream is nothing of the sort. If anything it makes the cards harder to handle.

You could argue that the container the water is held in might contaminate the contents over a given span of time.

thats what i thought but youd think that the container would be top quality from someone like volvic and they wouldnt use bottles that damage the water... :S

what a great discussion lol i may have to email them... or google it.... xD

Some states require all food and beverages, including bottled water, to state an expiration date on the label.

Secondly, over time, water picks up flavors from its packaging. These flavors, combined with warm storage temperatures, contribute to the "generation of musty tastes."

According to the International Bottled Water Association, the FDA has not established a shelf life for water, so you can store those bottles indefinitely. As long as the packaging is intact and unopened, you shouldn't need to worry about any type of bacteria or microorganisms growing in the water. If the bottle has been opened, however, it can grow bacteria and algae if it is not consumed within 2 weeks.

So while it doesn't appear that unopened bottles of water actually go "bad" in the sense that they would make you sick, they might not taste the greatest after several years of sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

thats the answer i found out from google... basically it goes stagnant if left in a bottle on a shelf... (i may have killed this fun discussion now though... :(.....)

The following answer has been selected and edited by New Scientist staff

Mineral water has passed through layers of rock that have different effects on the water. Some minerals dissolve in the water, supposedly improving both its taste and health-giving properties, hence the demand for it.

The small pore size of the rocks the water passes through acts as a filtration system, improving the purity of the water by removing larger molecules such as biological contaminants. As soon as the water emerges it is vulnerable to contamination again. The "best before" dates are based on the amount of time the bottler believes the water will remain without measurable levels of contamination due to the lack of completely sterile conditions in their bottling plants.

If the water is stored in a plastic bottle the date might also relate to contamination from the constituents of the plastic, which may change the taste of the water.

John Thompson, London, UK

i think that makes more sense...
