Webhosting Fees?

Postby themagicwand » Nov 5th, '07, 17:29

Hi - can anyone suggest to me what a reasonable fee per month for hosting a web site is? I know a lot of people get it for free with their broadband package etc., but if you were paying for such a service what is a reasonable monthly fee?

Many thanks in advance.

If it's' commercial, don't use 'free'.

I recommend webfusion.co.uk ... part of the huge Pipex group

godaddy.com? You might have already heard of them but they are pretty good.

Hi guys. Thanks for your input. I'm actually just trying to figure out if I'm being ripped off or not. I'm very happy with my hosting company at the moment but they have just increased the fee from £20 a year to £20 a month. Although £20 a month doesn't sound much, it does when you consider that I was only paying that per year a month or ago. I suppose £20 a month is reasonable - or is it?

NUMS site is hosted on a server which costs me £20 a month. But consider that the bandwidth is ridiculous and I need security, throughput etc. to handle the 200Mb per-day of traffic, and numerous visits.

However, standard sites cost around £9 a month, for all-singing and dancing database/scripts, plus full email control.

If you want to talk turkey, PM me...

£20 a year to £240 a year is certainly a rip off, unless they own your domain name, your .co.uk then ask elseware there are plenty of good hosting deals.
just read the small print carefully to see what your actualy getting for your money.

Thanks for that Seige. My site is one of those clever ones that allows me to update it really easily without uploading files to the server (or something like that). Because I'm such a numpty and don't generally have a lot of time to update my site, I think paying a little bit over the odds is worth it purely for the ease of use. Thanks for the info.

Now I really must get some decent photos taken for the site. Really.

plenty of options and the free one accepts comercial sites, what more could you ask for, ok something not ruled by bill gates possibly.

I use 1&1's basic package for my needs at around £7 per month and it's fine for what I need.

I can understand Seige paying the extra for NUMS as it's an online shop and security is crucial but if it's just to host a web site that's going to be hosted then you don't need a £20 per month package.

What kind of server are they giving you for that? Mine costs in excess of 3000 euro a year

I've been using http://www.arhoster.com/ for mine. I'm not an expert on hosting but I haven't had any problems with them and they are quite a good price. The support is also very good.

Well, my client server (where I host client sites) is costing me around £1200 a year. That allows me to host 100 domains though. When I originally migrated to that server, it took me well over 3 weeks of tweaking before everything was running fine again.

I am sure that if you're not au-fait with migration from server-to-server that £20 per-month is better than the hassle of moving.

Trust me ;)
