I was watching Criss Angel: Mindfreak on A&E a few months ago and i learned a very simple illusion. I instantly began performing it for my friends and family over and over until i learned a few more tricks. One thing led to another and i ended up obsessed with what i think is best described as the Art of Magic. I don't know what it is but every time i pull off a trick I get a sense of accomplishment that I had never felt before i picked up magic.

Since that first trick ive come a long way.....I learned the fundamentals illusion, card magic, and mentalism and now I drive my friends absolutely crazy every time i learn something new. Though i learned alot im struggling a bit, since im only 16 i don't have a credit card to buy mats online and i can't find a magic shop around where i live. If you have any advice as to how or what i should learn, i would appreciate hearing it. Thanks......Josh Tondre

Hi and welcome to TM,

Books are a good place to learn and much better value for money than one off tricks. If you've not already, have a look at Mark Wilson's Complete Course, a very good book. Also Royal Road for cards and Bobo for coins are brilliant books.

I wouldn't worry too much about mats and things, that sort of stuff can wait. Or if you do want something, pop down to your local carpet shop and see if they've got any off cuts you can have, a bit of carpet makes a good close up mat.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Thanks for the advice....ill be sure to look all of those books up.

And as for the mats i meant things like invisible string and silk cloths and things of that sort. I just don't have a magic shop around that i can go to.
