b****m deal

Postby cragglecat » Nov 14th, '07, 21:26

Hope the subject's not too cryptic. I want to learn this sleight but I've heard that some descriptions are basically pretty poor. Any advice on the best resources so I don't waste time on inferior methods? I currently have access to Tarbell, Expert card technique and Expert at the card table but would obviously consider other sources if they have good descriptions. All advice appreciated.

I am currently learning Erdnase's bottom deal. Although I haven't got the gist of it yet (and I don't have any time to practice nowadays :(), I can tell that it can be very deceptive. Just watch the Muleman's video. You MUST read every little detail though.

I see it's classed as a private video and you need to log in to see it - apparently!

You could also try looking for DVDs/Books from Richard Turner ad Edward Marlo:

Richard Turner DVD - Best of The Bottoms

http://www.richardturner52.com/dvd.html

I think the Marlo book is called 'Second, Centres and Bottoms'

I have the Allan Ackerman DVD 'Every Move A Move' and it covers quite a few extra sleights you could work in to a gambling demo along with false deals.

Hope this helps.

I'm currently learning the one in Expert card technique, and I've tried it with some mates in the 'old common room (NOT during a game) and no-one noticed a thing. I've never really researched the deal in great detail, but I'd reccommend having a good look at the one in Expert card technique if you have the book before investing in any DVDs, as it'd be shame for you to sell out some cash only to find that you already had a perfectly good one in front of you. Hope this helps. :D

Well I love the bottom deal and have spent a very long time on it. I did a lot of research and bought many DVD's and books teaching the bottom deal but some where in funny grips and didn't look or feel like a normal deal.

I wanted a bottom deal that you could deal tops, seconds and bottom from and all looked exactly the same.

Soo I bought Ian Kendalls lovely DVD tops, second and bottoms and started trying it out. Very very hard to do and I hate to admit that I didn't put as much as I should into it.

Then I got DVD 12 of Revelations that taught false dealing like the second, bottom and center and I remember Vernon saying the best bottom deal he's ever seen was one in the Straddle grip. This was perfect as it's the easiest of all bottom deals and can look the best aswell.

But, you couldn't deal seconds from the Straddle grip unless you used the New Theory Second Deal (I think that's the name) which is the one that I didn't want to use, for some reason. It's a perfectly good deal but I could already second deal (ala Kendall) and wanted to learn bottoms

Sooo I hate to say I never found the ideal bottom for me (very innuendo) untill I thought I should probably go back to Ian Kendall's DVD.

I did, but then modified it. Got rid of a finger flash and that annoying click as the card comes from the bottom (nearly all strike bottom deals have that click) and made it a lot easier.

I just changed the grip really. Hard to explain but it does the same a straddle grip, yet look and feels like a mechanics grip.

Don't know how to explain it. I'll try and get some photos up as soon as we delete some of the photos from the camera. It's all full up.

The most important thing about learning deals is to take the instruction that is offered, and then examine it to find where it may not fit your hand/finger/ear lobe.

Once you find a technique that suits you (and there are many out there) and you adapt it for your own particularities, you will find progress becomes that much faster.

Dealing is not a quick thing to pick up. A very fast learner will be looking at months as their main unit of time. And you never stop learning. I smile when I remember a mail I got from a customer who explained that he needed my CD quickly as 'he had a big game on Friday'.

Whichever method you choose, the best way to learn is short, regular practice sessions with a metronome. Six ten minute sessions a day is much better than one solid hour; you are less likely to sacrifice form through fatigue and it's a lot easier to fit into a day, so you are more likely to keep at it.

Take care, Ian
