Looking for a decent agent!

Postby themagicwand » Nov 26th, '07, 17:43

Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat...however soon will come January and the annual scratching around for work until the wedding season begins in earnest. So...

Does anyone know of any decent agents? By that I mean agents who will actually go out and find work, rather than sit behind a desk waiting for the phone to ring. Any info you had would be gratefully received.

Wouldnt mind knowing this as well to be honest, I work through virtual agents who sit back and wait for gigs to come to them, and want something more!

My thoughts exactly. Most agents these days tend to be little more than a website and a phone number. They just sit back and wait for the clients to come to them.

Hi,
How about getting some great quality professionally designed promotional material? New promo photos and flyers, business cards, a website update...
I'm serious and not touting for business (although thats always welcome) but it's amazing how much more work you can pull in through doing this.
Ok so it may be a bit of hassle and cost a few quid but its worth it in the long run.... the trouble with agency's is they obviously want thier cut and creme off the best jobs to favoured artists.

What you are probably looking for are a couple of people that do Party Planning, not an Agent or Talent Agency which, most approach the talent not the other way around... you might send them materials but I can assure you that most of what comes in "unsolicited" goes into the round file unseen.

Make friends with the Concierge of local hotels as well as the banquet hall managers. Your best of all deal is to get a couple of close-up gigs where you can be seen and "discovered" by people within the industry.

Is it worth asking at local 'big' hotels as to who they use for organising their functions?

I was at the Radisson at Stansted the other week and there was a function on while we were there - Fagin was greeting people at the door, there was a juggler in the lobby and a magician and a balloon artist both working the crowd in the bar.

I'm sure they use the same agencies over and over.

Yeah, you'd have thought that agents would monitor the entertainment forums. It'd make my job easier!

Actually, I understand why agents would not be on the board. And I know this is not going to be popular. But the question becomes who the heck are you? Why am I going to potentially waste a lot of time looking on message boards for the possibility of talent when I could be out there looking for or promoting jobs for the talent I do have on file. You want the work you have to work for it. Find the agents, find the party planners find the right people at the old age centers and hotels. And no I am not a talent agent. Thinking of opening a party planning business but have yet to decide.

quite true there but as this forum and i know that a few uk agents monitor magic bunny, have working pros and consultants on them for advice and such, agents can pick up clients for there agency and head hunt so to speak clients from other agents, similar to the way your football and baseball players are head hunted.

But the question becomes who the heck are you?
well were the cream of the crop, we have seasoned pros from stage and caberete as well as new comers like magic mark, we even have people who already have tv exposure.
tm is worldwide, iv'e had enquires from india, china and the us, all due to my assosiation with tm, not forgetting fiji.

so if talant scouts / agents think there wasting there time then there going to be on the short end.
please note I'm not having a go, realy I'm not but the thread was started to ask if there were any good agents that actualy agressivly seek work rahter than the run of the mill bookers that drop through my door on a regular bassis, also please note this post is specificly worded for the search engines which are monitored by agressive agents.

Well heck I know who you are, some of you are, (we are) I'm just taking another point of view. If I were an agent I'd have people monitoring the internet to be aggressive. But then I can be aggressive and I agree many agents are now nothing but a phone number and a web page when they should be just as aggressive as the entertainers and good agents can be hard to come by. I guess my point is if and I repeat IF you are sitting back waiting for the phone to ring, then you are just as poor at this as your agent. I'm not saying that is what people are doing. I'm just saying IF

i totaly agree with the if your waiting to be called bit and I'm considering going over to be an agressive agent myself judging by the feedback iv'e been getting from this forum and other sources in the entertainment fraternity, the days of pete waterman and such agents are being superseeded by computer nerds with multiple add accounts and broadband and the comunity as a whole wan'ts to see a return to the hands on agent, so if i decide to go that way i'll let you known and ask, nay demand you consider me as a future agent.

A manager is better than an agent. Someone to blame if it all goes wrong.
