Where can I find...

A small reel that retracts itself? For effects like the shoelace or vanishes. I was hoping some sort of hardware store might carry them, but I dont know what type of product to look for.

The best way to pose these queries is after you've introduced yourself and told us a bit more about your kind of magic etc. It would also help if you gave us an idea of which part of the globe you're logged on from otherwise we might make wonderful suggestions which aren't any use to you in that part of the world  ! Anyways, one suggestion if you're UK based is to call in at your local Timpson's and check out the key ring rack - there are two sorts, small and large and either will do the job - but there will be a bit of noise so you need to cover that with patter of other audio camouflage. Other than Timpson's, I would imagine chain stores souvenir shops and so on might stock the same kind of thing. Also check the online magic shops - they may have something you could use, if you can't find it on their site just e-mail and ask them.

They should be pretty cheap at ski shops for putting lift passes on. Hope that helps.

you can get very strong ones on ebay for £3.95. Search for retractable thread reel or something similar. They're for security guards or prison wardens and should do the job

Try a fishing tackle shop. I was tipped off some months ago about a small self retracting reel but can't remember what it was called. I'm assured that it's much better than the key type reel that has been mentionned.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Car supply shops (That sell spoilers and the like) often have them too.
