I want in again!

Postby HenryHoudini » Dec 29th, '07, 03:08

It's not fair! I get caught up in other things for a couple weeks, and now I can't seem to find the magic of magic anymore... I'm looking for something simple, that can help me realize what I loved so much in magic. I've looked through some stuff of mine, and Art of Astonishment is sort of helping, but nothing's really catching my eye... hm...

Well, I'd like to get into the whole deal again. If anyone has any ideas for me, please help. I loved it so much!

(I did a search, by the way...)

What was the very first trick/gimmick/routine that got you bitten in the first place?

Re-visit the roots of your magic to find that spark of inspiration once again and work forward from there. That's what I would do

It's always good when placing a magic order to get some things you need to get your teeth into and a couple of easy to do tricks to amuse yourself. Once you have played with your new toys you'll be ready and inspired to tackle the tricky stuff!

lemme think... jeez. Svengali decks tend to bore me. :-)

I'll look at a couple trick decks I had, and see if it brings me back in. Thanks!

Take something(s) you already know and can do well and perform them to some genuine lay people. Their reaction and the moments of suspended belief you give them is what it's all about and should be a big enough reward and a reminder of why we do what we do.

Or buy yourself some new toys, that might work too!

I personally don't think that any one effect or even any one book can re-invigorate your passion for magic.
It is either something you have or don't. We all however (well I do anyway) do have lapses of slight disinterest and it it as times like this when you need to perform for people as that is where the true attraction lies.
Chucking more money at a hobby will help in the short term but long term you'll end up with a cupboard full of stuff you dont use and will be left with the same feeling that you began with.
Learn and practice what you need to perform and then go knock 'em dead...not literally of course

I bought myself "Panic" By Aaron Fisher, and it didn't do much. Though that may have been due to it being rather annoying.

One thing that's been helping is helping out my friend, who's extremely new to magic, so I'm helping with what makes magic magic.

I'm back.
And all it took was to finally meet someone else who had a genuine interest in magic. Who wants to give me a round of applause?

expert card technique talks about something feeling ''missing'' from your magic and that ya go for a new effect all the time and thats not enough and then the next and more and more and your never happy....its under the presentation section at the back...it basically tells ya that the reason for the longing for new tricks is cause your presentation isnt as good with the ones u already know,so ya think you need something better for your audience whereas the reality is that you need to be better for your audience

You (or Jean Huggard) hit the nail on the head there, it's very easy to get 'addicted' to buying new tricks and especially gimmicks rather than taking the time to learn, practise and master the material you already have.

I find that only having a small group of people that you perform to can cause a type of 'cabin fever' where you don't get the chance to really master and own the effects as you only get about 4 attempts to perform each effect before you start repeating to people (which should be avoided at all costs).

Getting 'out there' (Not in a 60's hippy way  ) and performing to genuine lay people can really help to re-ignite the fire of passion you once had for magic.
