Half Crowns

Postby Galgael » Jan 2nd, '08, 22:15

I am going to Glasgow tomorrow, does anybody know where I may be able to pick up a half crown or two? I am going to try the Barras. Any other suggestions? i will check in the morning for any replies before I leave home for a two hour drive. (ps I am not going just for the coins, they are the second bird with one stone thing)

cheers

Jamie

The best place I find for these sort of things are the little collectables shops, places that sell things like old post cards and stamps. They usually have quite an interesting range of old coins, that's where I usually hunt for my old pennies.

The North Lanes in Brighton (sorry, a long way from Glasgow) is a good place. I have a selection of crowns I picked up there

or failing that, car boot sales - there's one at Kinross Sunday Market that usually has people with boxes of old coins and things that they've found up the loft (I'm generalising, don't go there specially, as I haven't been there for a while, but if you're passing...), or good old eBay.

Thanks for your input,

I bought 2 half crowns and a crown for 7 quid at a jewlers that sold medals and coins about two minutes walk from central station. i then went to tam Shephards trick shop and treated myself to 2 half dollars and Jay Sankey's The art of sleight of hand DVD. The propriator did a trick for me there and then and said, " great to meet a youngster (I am 35) who wants to learn skilled magic rather than instant tricks. What a nice old gent, I am sure I will be back there in the future.

cheers

Jamie

Glad to hear you got it sorted, and nice to hear that you visited Tam Shepherds. The guy that served you would have been Roy Walton, he's a very good magician, a legend in his own lunchtime, and invented a trick called Card Warp, if you run a search on it, I'm sure you'll be able to find out more about it.

Agreed, and he's given me some very helpful advice over the years, he's never sold me a duff trick, and he's always spent time showing stuff to me. Haven't been to Glasgow for ages, but will need to pop in the next time I'm in the area.
