Ice, Ice Baby!

Postby Mark Waddington » Jan 3rd, '08, 14:22

Hi guys,

Im hoping your collective skills can help me. Im desperately trying to track down 3 or 4 good effects which is ice and snow related. Absolutely anything will be taken and noted, and dont worry too much about cost, as my producer has a tidy budget for my series!

Ive got roughly 3 weeks to pitch some little filler routines. I already have my main effect for the episode sorted, but just need a couple of filler pieces.

Cheers guys, I hope you can help me out.

"Snow storm out of China" - not exactly a trick in itself but a worthy end to a vanish or transformation etc (this is where loads of white streamers blow out of your hand).

Snow storm by Jay sankey is one that jumps to mind straight away or make water turn into snow using that insta-snow powder.

Hiy guys,

These are all great suggestions, cheers. The Explicit content suggestion sounds good!

Ive come up with a couple of ideas myself. My first filler is to change water to ice cubes. Can be simply achieved with easy to obtain items.

The other idea which we are deffinately using involves the actual ice rink we are working at for the filming. A card is selected, signed, and a corner torn off. The corner is kept as a receipt and the remainder is folded up and put into tissue paper. The paper is set alight, and dropped onto the ice rink floor. The selected playing card is then found sealed UNDERNEATH the ice of the Ice rink.

What do you think? any further developments?

how about a cups and snowballs using ice cups? I've got some molds at home to make ice shot glasses that might work.

a bit tenuous but you could do the 'Siberian' chain escape whilst skating around the rink - you could jump in the air & spin whilst doing the move and land with your arms wide apart. You could also weave a story about prisoners in Siberia etc.

Or..how about encasing yourself in a block of ice for a few days....sounds original to me

Erm smash n stab with icicles? Ok mybe not...

But on the cups and balls idea you could do something with snowballs and have the final load(s) as a block of ice which completely fills the cup? Or produce a carrot a couple of lumps of coal and some twigs, interspersed with snowballs, chuck it all in a bucket as it's produced, then turn the bucket over and hey presto! A little snowman.

Max Malini used to do an 'impromptu' routine with a borrowed empty hat where he produced a huge block of ice from it - Paul Daniels did this on his DVD of Max's magic. Perhaps not too practical in this day and age where hats are less common but you might be able to do it with a borrowed baseball cap or a borrowed rolled up scarf.

Frozen Deckery, where a selected card with the corner torn off (matching the one in the specs hand) appears in a block of ice inside a card box is a good one though requires a fair bit of prep. It's in Apocalypse vol.1 though I'm sure it's been printed elsewhere too.

I bought some fake ice cubes from Viking Magic recently and they are very good quality. They fill with water and 'leak' when you want them too.

Great for a chop cup routine or anything else that you can come up with.

Heard about a magish once (vaudeville times) who used a specs hat to flip a coin. on the third try when it still was face up he tried once more and the coin was frozen solid in an ice cube larger than the hat.
Thats a pretty c*** description actually but meh....
