Hello

Postby dhatcher » Jan 8th, '08, 18:09

Hello Everyone. I am a newer registered user of the site, but have been silently reading for a while. I have been involved in magic since I was 14yrs old. I am currently 31. I have been a working professional for about 6 years. My wife and I have an illusion show that we perform regularly. You are welcome to visit us at www.lakecharlesmagic.com

I am always looking for advice from older and more experienced entertainers. I am a life-long learner and never want to become stagnant in my performance.

I am also always looking to purchase used stage illusions. If you have any illusions for sale, please contact me.

I look forward to much enjoyment from this site and from meeting some of you. I'll talk to you soon!

hi dehatcher , im no forum troll and i also happen to be a christian , but im not sure what christian magic is ..... i clicked your link and it states your purpose is to share your love of jesus in a clear way through the art of illusion" , please dont be offended but i dont think theres anything clear about illusion ...also i would like to think of magic as something that people of any religion could enjoy without feeling nervous , here in the uk you would never get booked in a school or something if your magic act was based on religion as a lot of kids are in mixed religion schools, so i think your missing out on a big part of the potential audience right there.
i also feel that children are very impressionable and that religion should be understood for what it is rather than having it sweetened like a bitter pill in the guise of entertainment.

as i said i am a christian but i just couldnt help posting my feelings here , even thought its only my second post , i apologise if i offended anyone
peace

Let me take your post and answer it in order of your questions. First, if the purpose of your illusions is not clear, then why do them? No one enjoys a show full of random effects that proposes no story line or no cohesion or looks put together in an amateurish manner. What I do is perform the majority of my illusions show purely for entertainment and then use some very basic, easy to follow illusions to illustrate some very important truths. It is the same approach as Andre Kole, if you are familiar with his career.

Second, it is quite certain that anyone of any religion can enjoy my show. However, as with any magician, my personality is a big part of my performance and show. Typically I get booked to do certain types of shows for certain events based on the type of show that I do. I do not "preach" religion, but my church shows do end with a Christian message. The places I perform welcome this and about 99% of the time actually request it.

Third, it is not my desire to do school shows, so that aspect of how I may be viewed by the academic world is negated. If I were asked to do a school show, I would certainly do it. Would I perform a "Christian" act? No. I would perform a basic, humorous and fun, stage illusion show. It would be entertaining and enjoyable for everyone. However, my primary goal is to perform for specific events. I am a part-time professional illusionist, so this is not my main source of income.

Fourth, I agree with you that children are very impressionable. That is why I take very seriously what I do. I do my best to put truth in very simple and understandable terms so they can understand. I think if you saw one of my shows, you would be much more at ease. I am not a "Christian Extremist" prowling for and brain-washing children! I am simply an illusionist who happens to be a Christian who happens to teach truths through illusions to places (i.e. churches) who ask.

I hope this clears things up a little. I do not normally like to relate myself to "Gospel Magic" due to the fact that it is often done with "cheesy" patter and less-than-impressing effects. I attempt to perform with magical integrity and provide quality entertainment.

I would enjoy talking with you further. Thanks for commenting!

what a cool answer ;) thanks , i was afraid you might take my questions the wrong way , what i mean by illusion not being simple to understand is that its basically deception , but i agree what better way to get kids focused than use a story , and one containing good moral values , i was just thinking its kinda a radical approach to preaching , i never imagined that the 2 should mix really . your heart is obviously in the right place .
Another reason i was kinda suprised to see a christian magician is as you know a lot of "non believers" refer to jesus as nothing but a magician and quote the water to wine story etc , i mean could kids come away from your act thinking you had biblical type powers ? when its just magic for magics sake it seems so much simpler :) id love to see your act i bet id love it and my kids. Its just that when i wanna do spiritual stuff i go to church and do it ,
im the kind of guy that lets my kids goto cub scouts and i love all the activitys they do but when it comes to easter and they have to go to church and stuff it kinda niggles me , i feel like theyve been recruited into some kind of cult {they have to swear allegiance to the queen}that spends most of their time having fun with them just to get more people to go to church , call me cynical but i just cant help it heheh .
then of course we have the queen who is the head of the protestant church , cant say i have much time for the royal family , and why on earth they should live in such pomp , whilst the bible preaches the meek shall inherit they earth il never know :? likewise with all religions really , i cant think of a poor religious leader actually .
some usa preachers, like the guy whos in jail for fraud i cant remeber his name bobby something i think , basically got shedloads of cash for jesus and bought a whole lot of rolls ropces with the cash ..... i dont see the diffrence between him and the queen tbh , shes the leader of a church , who owns palaces , purely from the fact her ancestors killed a lot of people and took their land lol its crazy
anyway i moved off the point a little there and this posts long enuff :)

Thanks for understanding. Let me mention one more thing. In all my performances, I tend to open with about a 10 minute musical act that is fast paced and it concludes with the production of my assistant. After that, we do introductions. When I do shows for children at churches and that type of event, I always include something to the effect of the following: "I want you to know that what you're seeing tonight is simply magic tricks. We have no magical powers and we aren't doing miracles. What we do is use tricks to teach you real truth." I normally follow that up with a very simple sucker-type trick illustrating the power of illusion. It gets them laughing and makes my point that the hand is quicker than the eye!

I have some things on DVD. If I can get them uploaded to Youtube for something, I'll post it here. Good luck in yor magic and thanks for the conversation!

P.S. Don't NOT go to church because you feelings toward the royal family...you don't go to church for them anyway. Go to church FOR yourself, your family and your relationship with God. Let the Queen answer to God for her own actions. I hope things get better!
