Hi Dave welcome to TM and to magic.

If you're looking to get started, get yourself a copy of Mark Wilson's Complete Course, a very good book that'll give you all the basics.

Hey Dave welcome to TM!

Lady of Mystery is right, grab a copy of Mark Wilsons complete course in magic. Its available in quite a few book stores such as WHSmith and Waterstones.

For more specialised reading, the following books are well known and accepted as the perfect starting point.

Card Magic and Handling - The Royal Road To Card Magic by Jean Huggard. (Available in Borders and Waterstones, as well as nearly ALL magic shops.)

Coin Magic and Handling - Modern Coin Magic by J B Bobo.
Not as widely available but the only real starting point on the subject, almost all magic stores will stock this!

Mentalism - 13 Steps to Mentalism by Tony Corinda. Originally published as 13 smaller sections, this book will get you started and into some decent mentalism! Again, not available in your average bookshop but Magic shops and Amazon will definately stock this!

Hope this has been a help, browse the reviews forum for more in depth guides of the above books! These are the "bibles" of magic I guess!

Have fun here![/url]

Hello Dave welcome to TM. I am one of the few mentalist who will disagree with this advice. But I know a couple of other. I would actually Start of with Karl Fulves self working mental magic it is also cheaper then 13 steps.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

I'll have to second Marky boy's suggestion of Karl Fulves, in fact any of Karl Fulves books are well worth looking at, have a look at Amazon marketplace, you can usually pick them up for around a pound.

Get a svengali deck,ya can make miracles with them

a lot of laymen know the workings of them.thats why i dont use them to show that every card in the deck has changed to the chosen card...how ever i use this deck for mentalism like ''just cut the card and take the one you cut to'' then i got thru them (i have a mirage btw) and say you could have had any of these in the fan.....the fact that the card is forced is completley over looked as the spectator has cut the deck

get Encyclopedia of card tricks...you will not fail if you buy this book,id recoment expert card technique only for your starting out ...hope that helps =)

and btw id stay away from ghost decks as theyre far too fishy looking. In my honest oppinion,i think to do a svengali routine with a ghost svengali deck is a recipe for disaster as they say only to leave you with hearing ''Let me see that mad looking deck''
