Number Sequence Puzzle

Postby moonbeam » Jan 17th, '08, 21:25

Quite straight forward enough (ish  ) - simply find the next number in the following sequence:

1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, 312211, ?

Have fun  .

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

pahh!

13112221

Easy enough! and then 1113213211 i belive! May have made some silly typing error, but Im sure thats correct!

See if anyone can work out why! Thats a bit trickier:P

You get the next number by creating a group of numbers based on the term that comes before it - the first is quantity, the second is the digit.

example:

1 - has 1 "1" in it - so the next number is 11
11 - this has 2 "1's" in it - so the next number is 21

and so on...

oooh - I know the answer.

But I can't tell, because that would be exposure!

But to prove it...

The next line to 1113213211 would be

31131211131221

Ta - Daaaaa

Next in sequence to 1211 is 111221 because...

Look at 111221 as 11/12/21 and then look at 1211 again. In 1211, looking at each digit in turn and taking two like digits as one, there is one 1, one 2 and two 1s. This translates numerically as 11/12/21 or just 111221.

Hope that makes sense. I'm sure there are better ways of explaining it, but there you go.
