Quick Fix

Postby timlic » Jan 19th, '08, 19:19

Hello fellow TM'ers

Hope we're all good... Now, am I the only one to notice the amount of new members who are asking questions that seem to be a 'quick fix' on magic?

I'm not having a go at new members, because we were all new once, but some of the questions seem to get asked in a way that they want to know how ow something is done... NOW!

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, if I am, I apologise, but we all know that magic is an art that can't just be picked up in a few days. It takes time, practice and patience.

Welcome to all new TM members!

And have you noticed how many of the old members post time and time again messages suggesting newcomers slow down, buy books not the latest packet effect, learn half a dozen effects well, don't overlook the classics etc.?

Fortunately many newcomers take note but, even so, I suspect we'll be having this same conversation next year, the year after and the year after that......

me too...I got stung buying some packet effects...then found TM...now I've got Mark Wilsons book, Modern Coin magic, and RRTCM etc. also having mark wilsons book has given me an insight into sponge magic and found it really quite interesting; so I've recently got the spongeball toolbox, which - once again - was recommended on here, I cannot back that recommendation enough (if you want some in depth stuff on sponge work obviously!)

So TM pointed - and continues to point - me in the right direction and now my actual magic skills are improving...as well as the bank balance

I'm inclined to agree with Mandrake here; as new starters it's easy to get caught up in the business machine of magic before you find a real life community or use TM either way it's the same result when you get into that community you choose the path...if you want the latest gadgets etc. then that's ok...but for me being pointed in the right direction on the book front has paid dividends beyond the £15-£30-£45 that can be spent on packet effects...for example the wilson book say £15 there's so much stuff in there I'm guessing if I ever get to learn it all effectively I'll know more than enough about magic, however that's not how I'm using the book as my statement on sponges above shows...and besides which...do we ever stop learning? Hopefully not; because that way we can keep on growing as performers!

that's my 2p worth...basically it's gonna happen, and sometimes it'll continue to happen against advice...nowt we can do except keep spreading the advice when and where it's wanted...
