Hey to everyone on this forum.

Just literally joined after finding this site from another website.

Well how about a little about me. Been interested in magic for quite some time actually. Always been amazed by it, really enjoy how elegant it is and I love the psychology involved, how its almost leading the audience down a path different to the one the performer is on.

My two favourite types, the ones I'm most interested in and would be interested in learning myself are mentalism (theres a real craze in this lol) and card magic.

I don't know which one I'd like to take up most to be honest, whether I can take up both or whether it would be wise to take up just one?

I love how card magic looks, the skill and art involved in manipulating both deck and audience to create the desired effect.

Mentalism I've been well into since Derren Brown came on the scene to be honest, he was the first performer I saw that really involved this kind of work and I love everything about it.

Well cheers for reading anyone who's got to this point :P, hope to talk to you all in the other areas of this forum.

Hi and welcome to TM. Why not learn both, you might not be able to perform both together but if that's what you enjoy, then go for it.

Cheers for the advice, I just wasnt sure whether both are a complex side of magic (well, they are), that means it would be very difficult to go and learn both.

Start with cards and learn some good mental magic with them. Remember, mental magic is all acting anyway, but you throw in some sleights to get what you need done for your "mind reading."

This beginning work will teach you the acting that you need to make your mental magic powerful, then the next step is full blown mentalism which you've given yourself a bit of an anchor in with your mental magic.

It's a start, at least.

Anyway, for cards I suggest "Royal Road to Card Magic" (Hugard and Braue), which will give you a good foundation in card work. Also, you'll want to pick up "13 Steps to Mentalism" (Corinda) to give you a solid grounding in mentalism.

Merely my opinion.

Welcome to the boards.

Mike.

Mentalism has a lot to do with performance.

You can force a card. Heck, you can even use a Svengali deck if you're a bit lazy and make a simple "I will guess your card" into a total performance that would make them believe that you can guess their card using either telepathy, mind reading, reading body language (this is what Derren usually does), muscle reading...the performance is up to you.

A svengali deck can be a powerfull tool for mentalism. Take the deck out of the box and ask for a number between 5 and 20. Then ask them to name a suit. If the number named is an even number and the suit is say hearts, you can ask them their choice to add or subtract from the original number. Whatever they do you will end up on an odd number. Since the top card is one of the duplicates, all the odd cards are duplicates. You have placed a prediction card on the table to start, you get the number to count to and set that card next to the prediction. Pick up all the cards dealt in a pile and put them back on the deck, which resets the deck. All that remains is to reveal the matching prediction. If you end up with an even number to count, then tell them you will count off the top of the deck that amount and the next card will be their card. If you are a card guy and do alot of straight cards, you can even fool other magicians with a card at any number routine. Presentation is everything.
Welcome to TM and stay mental.
Cheers
Al

Welcome to TM.

I'd also recom, mend that you begin with cards and some general magic effect before moving onto mentalism. I think that you'll find the expereicne of doing it this way around ore beneficial and your confidence in front of an audience will grow.

Even the great Mr Brown began with some general magic as hid his man behind the scenes, Andy Nyman.
