Smoke after a vanish

Postby Soulnafein » Feb 18th, '08, 18:11

Where can I find that stuff to create a cloud of smoke after a vanish of a small object? What is its name? I hope it's not exposure :)

Someone is bound to say it's most likely to be a Benson & Hedges each after their 'small object' has been vanished - and copy this into the Innuendo Bingo thread!

I suppose it depends on the actual object - if it's off a stage then the usual smoke pot effects can be electrically fired as per the arrival of the baddie in panto. Smaller stuff might be more difficult. There's a system where the source of the smoke is about your person and you can 'direct' it as and when you need it. I've only seen it once in performance and it was very hit and miss. The magish looked as though he was quietly on fire with odd wisps of smoke suddenly appearing right when they weren't needed.

There are a lot of smoke gimmicks for close up work. I spent a long time looking for something that works. The answer is that each one of them are usually a pain in the rear and usually involve a nasty chemical of some sort. Other then that what works in one instance will not work in another. I know that is not a lot of help, best bet is to find somebody involved in special effects and pick thier brains.

I think UltraSmoke 2000 is what you are looking for. Don't know where it is sold but google should help you with that.

Its expensive though, and can sometimes stain your clothes, but I think people see it as the best at what you are looking to do.

I really wouldn't bother if I were you - is it really vital for smoke to appear, or is it something you just fancy having a go at? All the smoke production methods have some major sting in the tail... either it rots your clothes, or it's hard to control, or it stinks and messes up your hands... all for a something which will probably have lost it's novelty value after a week!

I think that as magician I should try to present magic as what I think it's "Real Magic". In my idea of magician there is puff of smoke, colorful lights, fire and electricity :)

You could produce the smoke from your mouth, just hold the object in your hand and blow on it (yeah yeah yeah) then vanish it and blow some smoke into your now empty hand.
loses the magically appearing-out-of-nowhere puff of smoke but it is easily do-able without having a cig about your person

I think that you would be wise to listen to bmat and Farlsborough.

I purchased the Smoke 2000 system, because I felt much the same as you. I mean, seriously, how magical would it be to have something vanish in a puff of smoke - not only that, but to be able to do it anytime, anywhere, as the spirit moves you. That really is magic.

So, upon getting the system, I immediately did everything necessary to set it up for use with one of my jackets (that's right, you have to have sleeves that will allow a bulky system to be installed) and wasn't real pleased with what was required. If I dropped my arm then I'd get a puff of smoke without wanting one. I had to be very, very careful of how I held my hands, otherwise I'd give away the system...Just far too many technical issues for me to deal with, on top of dealing with the general technical issues of doing magic.

I put the system away.

Recently, I've been selling off a lot of the things that I've picked up (that I no longer use) and figured if I could get a fraction of cost of this system by selling it, then good deal. I opened the package (still in its original box - I don't throw anything away) and pulled out the cartridges...They fell apart in my hands. The chemical had eaten away the ENTIRE cartridge. It was all over the plastic bag that it was stored in, all over the box (having eaten through the plastic like it wasn't there) and was beginning to foul up stuff that was packed in the box around it.

I had to throw away some stuff that wasn't even associatied with the system, because the chemical was eating through and fowling up everything around it.

I would suggest that you give such things a pass.

However, if you are working (doing magic) on a regular basis and making some big money, then go ahead and buy the system, because your finances should allow you to buy new clothes on a regular basis (from the chemical eating away the clothes that you wear now) and you'll be able to afford good insurance because if your spectators breath this stuff in, you'll quite possibly have a lawsuit on your hands...Oh, and have a good doctor, too, because it will be a regular occurence for you to get a good whiff of the stuff from time to time yourself.

But, it does make magic look more magical.

Mike.

Thanks, Gang, for the tips on the smoke. I think I'll spend the saving from not buying it on beer...

All the best,

A couple of years back, my wife gave me a "fog machine" , which she thought would add something to my act. Well, it looked more magical;, but people couldn't breathe. Whatever the fluid was that it used, when heated produced an odor you did not want to inflict on anyone.

Did not take me long to vanish it.
