Childrens Magic

Postby Johnny Wizz » Feb 21st, '08, 16:45

I will start with the apology. I am sorry, I know that this has been asked before, I just can't find the answer.

I am looking for books and DVDs specialising in magic for children, especially ones with instructions for constructing your own tricks.

I have decided to build up the childrens side of my work following a few succesful casual shows I have done but want to do the thing properly.

Any kids magicians out there who can help me?

Thanks

John

I don't know what it's like, but Mark Leveridge has a book called The Complete Magic Party which deals with many aspects of entertaining children with games and magic. It may or may not interest you...

“Seriously Silly" by David Kaye is highly recommended by UK entertainers.

There is one book that towers above all. Open Sesame by Eric Lewis and Wilfrid Tyler. It was written many many years ago and I believe Magic Books By Post has copies.

The book is wonderful not particularly because of the material -which is good- but because of the first chapter which has no tricks in it at all but has the REAL secrets of entertaining children therein.

I am afraid that I cannot recommend some of the advice in the Silly Billy book. Some of the information would result in you being asked to leave the premises. We British are very posh and do not consider jokes about "farting" to be suitable fare for children's entertainment.

No wonder Silly Billy died a death at Blackpool a few years ago.

Hi,

I second the recommendation of the Mark Wilson book. ( available for an incredibly low price!)

I have recently discovered Netflix, which has some good children;s magic DVD's like "Step-by -Step Magic" , "Learn Magic With Lyn" and The two 2-part series "Magic for Kids" ( Pts. 1 and 2) and "Magic for Young Adults" Pts. 1 and 2. I have been impressed enough by the Magic w/Lyn and the "Magic for..." DVDs to purchase them.

Michael Jay's suggestion of seriously silly may be just the job for you. Judging by your posts you are a more than competant and knowlagable magician and this book would enable you to see which tricks you have that could entertain a child and how to routine them. In fact this book is more about the psycology of kids shows than the tricks themselves. I can thoroughly recomend it. Have fun :D

The psychology of kids' shows = keeping the little sods out of the parents' way for an hour.

The Complete Magic Party by Mark Leveridge

I would second the vote for Mark's excellent Magic Party (DVD and book). I haven't seen the Seriously Silly DVD or book, but Mark's Magic Party is pretty comprehensive. Never let me down anyway, also includes plenty of stuff on party games etc, which many parents look for. As themagicwand says, the parents want the little darlings out the way for as long as possible these days...

This may go against the grain, but I couldn't get on with Mark Leveridge's DVD. I sold it within a week of watching it - I personally wasn't impressed. I found it slightly old fashioned in approach. However, remember that's my opinion of the DVD and NOT the book that's been mentioned...

Seriously Silly by David Kaye (Silly Billy) is an awesome book, but has no plans for props as such - more an ideal for performing to kids. A formula, if you like.

Mark Wilson (which I'm sure you already own) has plenty of plans in to build your own kit, though.

One performer that hasn't been mentioned yet is Bill Abbott - his DVDs are absolutely awesome and he goes into detail about constructing the props he uses. Thoroughly recommended. 5 star DVDs for content, value and production. You'll watch them just to entertain yourself.

I'm less then 14 and I like card tricks and my brother adores sponge balls. What they would like the most would be levitating things or disappearing stuff
