Anyone speak Latin?

Postby AndyRegs » Mar 1st, '08, 15:35

I have just been digging for information on my family ancesters, and found that we have a family motto! Its...
Ardens et aequum

Anyone know what it means? (Probably something like 'I interfere with goats' knowing my luck).

According to my Latin dictionary - it means something along the lines of "Fire and justice" .

Although I definitely sense undertones of "to the molestors of goats has been delivered..."

Yeah I'm no latin speaker but there are legal definitions which contain the word 'aequum'
such as 'Bonum et aequum' which means 'justice and the public interest' (roughly speaking).
I think 'aequum' translates to 'what is fair and on a level footing'.

But then again. What do I know.

Dunno the Latin for ours, it's a four-line thingy, but I prefer "Carpe Jugulum"

I may be mistaken, so don't quote me on this, but having studied latin for six years and written extensive thesis on the subject, I do feel I am bit of an authority on the subject.
I have consulted many of the rare books I have on my shelves and even visited the British library where there are some very useful and hard to come by books on latin and some of the more obscure words.

According to my research, "Ardens et aequum" can be directly translated as meaning "Ant and Dec".

I always wanted a moto some thing along the lines of Death or Glory. But then again maybe just the Glory not really after the death.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.
