Looking for advice concerning Loops

Postby Flow » Mar 2nd, '08, 08:04

Good morning, Fellow magicians.

I've fallen for the effects of invisible threads and would love to learn the skills myself.
Problem is, I don't know anything about IT. So I turn to you for help.

Does it require a high expertice in hand dexterity and other skills?
To be honest, my experience as a magician is rather limited.

Some advice on which products to buy would also be very much appreciated.
I browsed Yigal Mesika's homepages and found that the Loops and the Spider Pen were quite popular. And there was something called Elastics, if I remember correctly.

I'm also looking for a good book on the topic, or other learning resources and some good shops were I can purchase these articles .

All help is appreciated,

Flow

If it's specifically Loops you are interested in, I recommend the booklet Animated Miracles by Mesika. Loops are very fragile and take a while to get used to the handling of them.

Pre-made loops are expensive and they will break and cost you a small fortune. I recommend investing in the S.T.EL.T.H. Loops making system from Nothing Up My Sleeve. Buy one packet of loops so you can play around them and then this system and some thread.

You will get more for your money and they are very simple to make. The Mesika Elastics in a dispenser is a good purchase along with this system as is the silkworm thread.

Mesika himself has brought out a DVD with Finn Jonn (which is about £50) and looks very good although I have yet to purchase it.

Who's Afraid of IT is a good dvd too, it's a little more expensive than your average dvd but it's got lots of thread and putty with it. Thread work can be a tad frustrating but it doesn't usually require a fabulous amount of dexterity, more familiarity with the material.

Levitation effects are a bit like mentalism in that you really have to engage your audience and involve them emotionally in the performance, if there's any element of a puzzle whatsoever you've failed. After all, if an object is floating unsupported in the air there's only a very short list of things that can be keeping it there and it hardly takes the most astute mind to work out what's going on.

The artist who does not rise, descends.

I find the ring levitation from Animated Miracles, if done for a few seconds, is incredibly effective and as I do it with sleeves rolled up and apparently no sign of "strings" it creates an amazing response.

Thanks for the tips, guys.
I've been reading around the boards and it seems like the LeClair DVD hits home. I couldn't find much information about Mesika's DVD here though. I'm considering picking up his booklet and maybe purchase LeClair's DVD.

I'll definetely be getting the S.T.E.L.T.H device! I'll try the silkworm at first, I think.

Freddie, are you by any chance buying this DVD in the very near future?

I am thinking about getting it and will certainly do a review when I do.

The link to it is here:

It sounds like it could be good.
