Copyright for The Pass??

Postby queen of clubs » Apr 3rd, '08, 17:22

I was thinking about the recent discussions on the pass and where to learn it...

If I was to make some sort of instructional video on how to perfect the classic and invisible pass, would I get hit by any legal problems?

It's obvious that if I made a video explaining how to perform copyrighted effects it would be not only illegal but morally idiotic, but does the pass "belong" to anyone? Could I make my own tutorial and it would be fine?

I'm not talking about shoving some exposure vid on YouTube for every man and his dog to oogle, I mean something purely for other card magicians.

I've been told my pass is second to none (which I'm sure was a huge exaggeration) but I happen to think it's pretty good and I do adore the move and dedicate a lot of practice to it, so I think a vid might be useful for those who are having trouble...

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't have thought you'd have any problems. The pass is a technique that's been around for donkey's and is in pretty much every book on cards. It's be like saying that a DL belonged to someone.

The pass is not copyrighted, nor is it trade-marked.

You would have NO problems.

actually i would be quite enthusiastic to see said stuff to....the earliest mention of it is im sure (though feel free to corect me) is in 1790 in a french text. So i dont think the chap could sue, and dont think its the intellectual propery of anyone. Though someone should be able to give you firmer advice than me (im thinking seige or maybe tomo cause they actually sell things)

Thanks, spudgun. I've actually improved since I made the video you're referring to. I'm cleaner still now :)

Anywhere I bloomin well please, hehe! There are a zillion free file hosting sites out there, and I also own three websites should I wish to host it myself.

This is just an idea I'm considering, though. It's not like I'm planning on doing this tomorrow.

That would be great. I would definitely take a look, as I've been told my pass is second to many :D

My pass is second to none.
Really!

It doesn't come close to second. 1000th to some maybe, but definitely second to none.

Hehe, very nice :P

OT: My pass can use quite a bit of work and I'd be very interested in this, should you decide to go ahead with it. I've seen your pass and couldn't agree more with what's already been said already about it.

I've seen one around already. Its called Passmaster IIRC.

Assuming that he didn't get any problems, then you should be fine
