Card Game Obsession

Postby monker59 » Apr 6th, '08, 05:19

Okay, this just might be me, but lately I've been having a difficulty with card games. I can't get enough of them! In the past month I have played more variations of more card games than I have in me entire life. I'm starting to wonder if I'm developing a gambling problem (even though I'm not gambling real money). I think this problem started when I started practicing my card effects more. Now I'm asking all of my friends and family to get involved in card games with me. Here's the thing, does anyone else have this obsession with card games? I really think I'm starting to lose it.

There are broadly two categories of card games that I love to play.

The first category is that of games that I've known for years, played by my family's house rules. They are often very simple, which suits me just fine because I think most of the fun of card playing comes from the verbal banter between players, and not from any sort of strategic sophistication. I love these games for their sentimental value. They include "Ups and Downs", "Donkey", "Oh Hell", and "Warlords and Scumbags".

The second category is that of being introduced to new card games that are different from anything I've played before. There are so many new and intriguing ideas out there, and it's fun to experience someone else's favourite game. "You show me your favourite and I'll show you mine" appeals to me very much as a way to fill up an evening. I don't enjoy all games but I'll try almost anything once.

One thing I'm not interested in is playing cards with people who take games too seriously. They're supposed to be fun, after all, and I believe that playing them seriously and competitively defeats the whole point. I'm also not very interested in Poker and other games that involve gambling.

I've invented some games of my own, but to be honest none of the multi-player card games I invented are much good. My domino game, Peaks and Pits, is pretty good, though.

One more thing: for the category of Card Game Most Appropriate For Innuendo Bingo Players, I would have to nominate Laugh And Lie Down. Yes, I'm well aware that there are games out there with names that are much more crude - which is precisely why I consider them less suitable.

I can play poker for days, but I wouldn't say I have a problem with it. If you're not gambling away all of your money, then it's not a problem to play card games. Once money comes into the mix, you may want to reevaluate...

Yeah, I agree with you there. The most I've ever played for is nickel and dime poker.

I play poker for money sometimes.
got a big dirty chip set and obviously we use my Bikes
Basically we spread the chips equally and everyone chucks a fiver into the pot. Last player in wins the pot.

Everyone loses a fiver, but someone can win - not a problem to me :D

And actually, I've been meaning to get back into Canasta...

I play Blackjack since I saw "21"

Not seriously though, just for fun. No money involved.

And the reason I got into it was that I knew that what they were doing in that movie wasn't nearly as hard as they made it look. In fact, it's extremely simple. All you have to be able to do is count to 20 and know what a negative number is.

Blackjack is a cool game. They went through some basic card counting methods on The Real Hustle a few times.

Didn't know about 21... will have to go and watch that!

I used to play blackjack a lot. I've never been very good at counting cards - particularly in casinos that will use a stack of 4 decks - but I remember playing a table once with a guy who knew his stuff. He had the last chair (ie the chair that was dealt to last) and was basically directing the hands of the other players, telling them when to take a card and when to hold. The whole table was really skinning the dealer for a few hands until der management changed dealers and got a bouncer to stand next to the gambling guru guy. He was told to keep quiet, and after that normal service was resumed - ie the dealer pulling 21 after 21.

I've often tried to figure out how the dealer wnds up pulling 21 so often. Or perhaps it just seems that the dealer pulls 21 more often than you would imagine possible. I guess the real advantage the dealer has is knowing what the others players are holding.

Anyway, yes, I enjoy blackjack. I also used to like 3 card brag, which was the real man's game in the UK until poker moved over the pond.

It should be noted that the "system" you see in 21 is not really the way you would do it in a live situation. Many methods and tactics were omitted, simply to prevent people from doing what you're trying to do. Keep it fun - but be warned - that system won't work in a casino.

The least they could have done in the movie, is not have all of the members of the team stay in the SAME ROOM! I can only suspend disbelief for so long...

I wouldn't say the dealer has any kind of advantage, wand - after all - the dealer isn't playing to win - just dealing. The dealer doesn't play any kind of strategy. It's more a case of perception. It only looks like they have an advantage when they're fleecing you.

No I understand that, I looked into it and I also talked to my algebra teacher about it, as he tends to know odd things like that, and he did.
