Congrats on setting the day, just don't ask for volunteer magcians to perform at the wedding in return for free food & booze, you'll be killed in the rush :D !

Why are weddings so blummin' expensive? And why do people go so far over the top? A mate of mine did it right for his second attempt: They flew to Vegas, were married by Elvis, flew to Hawaii for a week's honeymoon, then came home for a party.

Can you tell I'm not the marrying kind? :D

I got married in Vegas, too, Tomo! Granted, not by an Elvis - but it was a hell of a lot cheaper than getting hitched in NY (Where the typical wedding is never below $25,000 - UGH!). Best decision we ever made.

It's good of you to say - but you really shouldn't go offering my services without consulting me first

Congratulations, Magic Chris!

We got married in the UK four years ago and it cost us £20k. However, we received a total of over £10k in cash (gifts from the guests) so that lessened the blow somewhat.

Current CofE charges are below (very similar to Registry Office and other denominations) but due to increase a little in 2009.

Publication and Certificate of Banns - £34.00
Certificate of Banns issued at the time of publication - £12.00
The Wedding Service - £247.00 (This cost is set by Parliament each year)
Wedding Certificate - £3.50 (£7.00 if ordered subsequently)

Phew! That doesn't look too bad!

I need to get married at some pont - after all, I've already given the missus the big rock. Mind you, she seems content with the rock for now, so perhaps when I have a stable job I can think about this more seriously!

You need to be mindful of the additional fees, assuming a Church do there's usually a fee for the Organist or use of church organ if you have a friend willing to play, there might be verger's fees and additional costs for sweeping up confetti, church bells being rung are an add-on and if you need help with the singing then the choir also add to the cost of the day. Even adding all those up they're still relatively small compared to the money spent on photographers, caterers, venues, discos and any entertainment (!) plus,of course, the ol' booze bill tends to be significant as well. Then there's the cost of the honeymoon......er, I think I can see why a lot of folks prefer to just move in together  !

Just do as I do and live in eternal sin. Me and the missus have been together for 18 years (well it will be in May) and we've been engaged for what seems like forever - I'm guessing at 10 years.

Everytime she drops a gentle hint at the "M" word I remind her of the adage, "like father, like son". My dad was with my step-mum for 26 years until they recently got married, so by that reckoning I've got another 8 years before I have to formally commit myself  .

Congrats by the way  .

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??
