verbal forcing

Postby cragglecat » Apr 9th, '08, 19:12

Hi, hopefully I'm not going over old ground here (I did search previous threads and they didn't quite fit the bill). I'm interested in a '13 steps' effect called 'nicely suited' and need to verbally force the number 3. I haven't got a clue how to do this convincingly (sadly Corinda doesn't seem to elaborate as far as I can tell) can anyone advise me or suggest sources please?

Number 3?

Banacheks Psychological Subtleties not only holds the answer you want but many many more things too!
Cross reference it with Tomo's Naked Mentalism and cry tears of blood...

Can you let us know the page number in 13 steps to see what the effect is.

It's page 122/123.

It looks like the Banachek book is out of print. Is Tomo's book suitable for newbies to mentalism or is it an advanced text? To give you an indication, I've been doing magic (but no mentalism) for about 2 years.

Eeep. Didnt realise it was out of print :?

And I wouldn't recommend Naked Mentalism for newbies to mentalism.
But you could get the completely scripted Naked Book Test - that is, as mentioned - completely scripted. Still requires work, but more suitable than Naked mentalism for now.

I know - gutted it was out of print as it looked great. Thanks for the advice - I suspected Tomo's book could very well fry my fragile brain

Any other suggested sources for verbal forcing techniques?

Actually I'm not too sure where else you might learn it...

I'll have a think and a browse and let you know if I find anything.
in the meantime - maybe somene else will be able to offer more help than I can. Sorry!

I think that what you want to do in this situation, if I read correctly, is just cancel out by making whatever they say turn into odds, then narrow down until you only have threes. PM me if you want more details. I may be wrong.

Verbal equivoque might work

I was thinking there might be a more elegant method than equivoque (I can't see how I could make that work convincingly but this could be my own inexperience and I'm happy to be advised otherwise!)

Lady of mystery - thanks also for responding, I could use another forcing technique but since verbal forcing was suggested and I haven't got a clue how to do it I thought I would try to learn something new. It sounds like an incredibly useful tool.

I have just looked up the effect, and it seems to me that equivoque is meant to be used. Especially when forcing the odds over the evens.

Prompted by your post, and in an effort to see if I could help, I looked up this effect last night, and did it for my girlfriend. It worked perfectly (using verbal equivoque - with a bit of mime), and she was really surprised to see her card on top of the deck.

You do, however, have to be fairly confident with equivoque to do this. I'll drop you a PM with how I framed it.

I just took a look at it, and it reminds me of something I was using in the past.

Instead of using 3s, I used sevens
.
"In a moment, I'm going to ask you to think of a number. The first number that comes to your mind is from your/my (intuition, psychic eye, influence, etc.), I want you to go with that one. Now, name a number between 1 and ten, like three. Out loud, now."

Three and seven being the most common, I eliminated the three by saying it myself, so the seven is pretty much guaranteed to be the number named. Also, I would make the most impressive display the seven of clubs- if you ask them to add a suite to it (which, I think, suggests black by itself), clubs is the most commonly named suite.
