Hello everyone

Hi

where to begin? I've only recently got into magic seriously. I've always been interested in magic, and have enjoyed watching it. My first performance was probably when I was about 5 or 6 when i made a 2 pence piece cry in front of my classmate audience.

Alas I never took it further. I've never known anyone who performs magic, and I don't believe i've ever even been to a magic show :(.

I've recently just been searching for books and on the internet to try and teach myself a trick or 2.

If anyone has any suggestions or pointers i would love to hear them, so please feel free to PM me.

Many Thanks

Hey, welcome.

TM has tons of experienced old guys (I'm not one of them, mind you) with tons of great advice. As long as you stick to the rules (They are in the rules and etiquette forum), you'll find this place informative and fun.

As a beginner, you might be tempted to spend a lot of money on sites such as ellusionist or theory11, or get everything for free on youtube. Neither sources will do you much good. Ellusionist (more so than T11) are notorious for repackaging old tricks and methods and selling them as being the next big thing- for a good ten times the original price. The money you put into magic can be spent much better. Youtube exposure is just horrible. Disrespectful to inventors and performers, as well as crude. Not good.

I don't mean to preach, just thought you would like to know.

Good books to buy (for methods and basic theory and history):
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic
Tarbell Course in Magic
Anything written by Nicholas Einhorn

Good books on history:

Hiding the Elephant - Jim Steinmeyer
The Glorious Deception - Steinmeyer
The Illustrated History of Magic - (I forgot )

That should be enough to start off your magic library (not to mentions start your lifelong CUPS problem).

Good luck and again, welcome.

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking

Hi there, and welcome to TM!

If it's card tricks you're into then I suggest you get The Royal Road To Card Magic (RRTCM, is what it's quite often referred as on here).

This book will serve you well, and I reckon I will not be the only one who reccomends this

Enjoy your time here!

Hi thanks for the replies...I'm glad you suggested that book, as i already own it :). However i refuse to progress through it untill i have perfected my shuffle, which has always been pretty weak.

I must say, i have noticed there are a lot of people who are going onto youtube and revealing the secrets of various tricks, which kind of sucks.
