Hypocritical?

Postby Happy Toad » Dec 29th, '03, 18:23

Bought a book yesterday called "101 cool magic tricks" bargain at £1.25 from the Works.

Anyhow it repeats the well known position of " Never tell how a trick is done" In fact it has it in block capitals on page one.

So we have a book telling us how to do 101 magic tricks, available to anyone but telling everyone else not to tell anyone. Hypocritical or Not? Discuss :)

I think it means 'im allowed to break the rules and tell Joe public how the tricks are done but your not!'

Who wrote it coz that may have something to do with it, some authors are strange!

Only glanced at it so far, but some definitely arn't cool, some arn't even tricks. Others are basic classics like cutting and restoring the rope, I'm hoping to find a couple of little gems. Will let you know if I can do so without giving away any secrets :)

There are luckily three types of people out there in the 'magic circle'.

PERFORMERS:
People who learn and enjoy performing

SPECTATORS:
People who love to watch, totally passively, and be entertained

KNOWERS:
People who are neither of the above - and yet they love to know how the stuff is done

It's therefore a matter that anyone who has the inkling to BUY a magic book is either a PERFORMER or KNOWER. It's the SPECTATOR who shouldn't be told.

Oh, and by the way... it's also a sales tactic... by putting the line at the front of the book in big letters it's stating that you know something everyone else doesn't if you read this book... and people may just be inclined to buy it on that strength.
I'm quite sure the author of that 'warning' page has no cares who you tell it to, as long as the brass reaches their wallet...

Surely, by buying the book and spending the money, you have shown an interest to learn and perform magic. And therefore shouldn't tell the secrets to who you are performing to.

However if you had just brought the book to learn and expose secrets, then i doubt you could do much to ruin magic. The better magicians would just invent more compilicated ways of fooling you.
Saw this on a website somewhere...

"What do you do when people steal your jokes?"
"I write new ones, faster than they can steal them."
So...
What do you do when people expose magic?
Invent better tricks, faster than they can be exposed.

So, if you've brought the book to learn magic, you wouldn't expose the secrets. If you've brought the book to expose secrets, you've wasted your money.
