I was watching the same Derren Brown show last night with the undertaker who seperates photograps into two piles and they are all either ALIVE or DEAD, and it made me giggle at the end as he's shaking the undertaker's hand he says to him "Thanks, that was... out of this world"

Such a cheeky chappie.

And I perform the red/black card version of that myself. It's a remarkable effect.

When I read this, I thought, "Oh, surely not?!" Ran for the Tricks of the Mind DVD...

Ooh, what a cheeky little scamp he is!

Mind you, he says it so quietly that, even listening for it, I wasn't sure the first time. It sounds like "that was... well..." The DVD subtltles say "that was... that was..."

But if you have the commentary switched on, the comments stop at this point, and the commentary subtitles clearly show him saying "that was out of this world". Derren's co-commentator (the producer, Debbie Young) then says, "I like that bit," and Derren agrees, both with a hint of a smile in their voices.

I might add that his method of handling the photos, after the undertaker has divided them into two piles, is a lot smoother and cleaner-looking than most of the instructions you'll find for this trick. It wouldn't work with an ordinary deck of cards, though.

I wasn't aware the handling was shown. I don't have the DVD, but I taped the TV show version (well, not taped cos it's digital, but you know what I mean) and there are so many cuts you don't really see anything. Is the DVD version different?

As far as I'm aware, the handling is not shown on the DVD. You can see he is holding the cards and turning them over, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually show him handling the cards. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, no doubt. (I'll get my DVD out when I get home and have another look).

On the Youtube clip available, it continuously cuts away, he does the whole..."why did you say like to him?" which is similar to the "What colour do you think this one is?" towards the end of the trick, and his hands are dangerously close to those photos! I reckon it is a very very similar method, if not the same. If thats possible?

It's not shown like an instructional video, but if you know the trick you can see what he's doing. Smooth as silk.

Remember that the undertaker was told to sort the photos according to whether he felt positive or negative about the person in the picture -- there was no mention of dead or alive. The photos end up in two rough piles rather than neat stacks.

Derren takes the "positive" pile, spreads it out loosely on the table, pulls out one picture from the middle, and lays it in front of the undertaker, asking "why did you like this person, for instance?" While the undertaker answers, Derren casually tidies up the two halves of the spread-out photos. This is clearly shown on the DVD from an overhead angle.

After taking back the photo that's being talked about, he then picks up the "negative" pile in his hands, goes through it, and pulls out a picture to discuss. The handling isn't shown while the undertaker talks, but I think we can guess what he does with the photos he's holding in each hand. The undertaker is engaged in conversation, the camera angle is controlled, and there are no other eagle-eyed spectators to worry about.

Lovely. I'll remember this for use with "From Hell". It works with photos because you can discuss personal reactions to individual pictures. It's not much good with playing cards.

The undertaker was asked to work quickly and go on instinct, which helps blur any memory of what he decided about any particular photo. At any rate, after the revelation at the end, all the pictures are face-down.

A bonus is that, psychologically, people don't treat photos like cards. A loose heap of mixed photos already looks random. Nobody expects you to shuffle them, and generally nobody expects card-type "moves". They also don't expect anything to be on the other side.

Yeah, that routine is one of my favourites. Genius at work. The poor undertaker looked like he'd seen a ghost....

Sorry, memory fading even after I had just seen the blasted routine!

He doesn't spread the first lot on the table, but goes through them in his hands. As the undertaker talks about the picture, he moves both hands back and deposits the photos on the table.

Just watch the darn thing.

Derrens version is amazing, im only a beginner and i managed to pull it off and freaked out my partner. (poor girl she is being bombarded with tricks every 5 mins)

It relies on a bit of an unnatural move at the end but works great.

Derren's working of OOTW doesn't have a change in the middle. It's on Devil's Picturebook and it's fabulous.

I disagree. It doesn't rely on an "unnatural" move if you do it correctly. It relies on a very natural and genuis move.

Your right, I'm hardly a master of the art, but the off beat of the card turnover and the smoothness of the move, it is completely deceptive.

I agree that when Derren does it, it is a very smooh and fluid movement, but when I do it with my beginners hands it feels a little unnatural.

But it still works :D

Dont worry I dont claim to be near a performing level, except to my long suffering girlfriend.
