eBay and spam

Postby Replicant » Apr 28th, '08, 19:32

About a week or so ago, I was searching eBay for a Master's Time Machine watch. I very rarely use eBay for anything and this was the first time in over a year I had logged in to my account and made a search. Anyway, I found the watch and made the purchase. Ever since then, I have started to receive spam emails trying to sell me watches. Not just one or two emails, but numerous emails on a daily basis. Call me paranoid, but are eBay selling my details, i.e. my email address, to spammers? It certainly seems like it. Otherwise it's a bit of a coincidence. Image

I don't think it's connected. I get plenty of fake Rolex spam every day and I've certainly never bought a watch online, (or Viagra!)

It's more likely that the seller is linked into some spamming corporation and they gave your email away.

There do seem to be people scanning for eBay searches. I did an intensive search for something last year (can't remember what) and was suddenly bombarded with spurious "Second Chance Offers" to bid on vaguely similar items. The spam-storm didn't last long. I did inform eBay about it, though whether they did anything I can't say.

Time Machine = Watch. That's just brilliant.

Some guy I know in a computer shop gets a lot of spam.

He's had to get a really good spam-filter onto his work computer, he theorises that a customer seing "GET SOME VIAGRA EXCITMENT" might hinder business a little

Maybe your computer has spyware?

Definitely keep an eye out for spyware. Tracking cookies are everywhere, even if you stick to reputable websites. It's a bit like taking the dog for a walk in the woods -- fleas are inevitable, all you can do is kill them off.

I can recommend Ad-Aware from personal experience. (And it's free!)

It was probably a middle aged balding bloke pretending to be a Russian girl, it was probably that guy who did the sexy magic
