Work Experience

Postby crozboz » Apr 30th, '08, 09:21

Heya all, havent posted on here for a while as my laptop seems to not want me log in - what can you do eh?

But anyways,
That time has come in our school year to do work experience, late June, so we have a while, but the theatre for which I wanted to work has decided they dont want me (sound and lights - i wasnt trying to get on stage the easy way)

But now I am stuck - I wanted a job in the media ideally, for example the newspapers, but they dont want me, the radio but they dont want me, 3 theatres in york, but none of them want me - im beginning to feel unloved.

So I was wondering if anyone who knows anything about York could give me some pointers -

Im also curious to see what other people did for their work experience - purely for research obviously.

And possibly wondering if anyone from York-ish has anywhere which does work experience?

All the best, crozboz

Not knowing much about York I can't offer much help on that front (although, I went to the Jorvic viking centre as a kid and I think I'd love to work there, so maybe you could convince them that they want a "traditional viking magician" for a week).

For me work experience was a totally pointless waste of time because when I was in school I wanted to join the RAF, so I went there for my work experience and some of it was fun, but after I left school I lost interest in the idea. As such, I had learned nothing about the real world of work.

My best advice for you is: if you can't get work experience in a place you would like to work, go for somewhere you will be likely to work. If you think you might end up working in a shop (even if you're only there part time while you're at college), it may be useful to have done your work experience in one.

Media-wise, am I right in thinking that there's a Yorkshire Television? Have you considered them? Have I just made up a TV company in my head?

My advice would be: do something as fun and as crazy as you can. 2 weeks work experience means pretty much b***** all to the majority of employers, and all you actually get at the end of it (if it is a similar scheme) is a certificate saying you completed it satisfactorily - could be absolutely anything.

I did my first week with a guy who worked at a natural history museum, looking after the giant millipedes and tarantulas, making plaster-cast insects etc, it was fascinating.

My other week was on a Welsh sheep farm, I kid you not. We had befriended the farmer and his family after having stayed in their cottage several times on holiday. I was driving land rovers, quad bikes, tractors, climbing all over dangerous machinery, exposing myself to horrible chemicals... it was brilliant.

The Viking Centre would probably be a real laugh actually, and doesn't York have a dungeon of some kind? Or a ghost tour? Something like that would be great! The other thing is, York has some brilliant street performers as I remember - you could approach one of those guys, flatter them to death and get them to let you hang around, learning stuff about street performing - your magic would probably improve overnight!

How about finding a restaurant to work in, have a word with the manager and explain that you need to do work experience but would rather perform magic. See if you can do some table hopping in exchange for a little restaurant experience to help him/her out.

That way you both win

York - one of my favourite cities with lots and lots of attractions. I'd start here with some work in tourism meeting lots of the general public.

I also agree with Farslborough and think that you will have the most variety and fun doing someting along these lines.

Good luck

Tell you what Croz, you can come and be my teaboy, tidy my room, transport books to and from the library for me, do my washing, write notes for me etc. and learn all about what it's like to "work" as a medical student :D
