Derren Brown - eye candy?

Postby Replicant » May 16th, '08, 18:45

I've stumbled upon an effect by Larry Becker and Lee Earle called Eye Candy. It sounds very much like an effect Derren Brown performed in Something Wicked This Way Comes, except he used a newspaper instead of a magazine. Can anyone confirm this? It sounds like a great trick and my PayPal finger is itching again....

While I can't comment on this particular effect, I've been a fan of Becker & Earle's work, and can vouch for their quality across the board. The materials they put out are excellent.

This effect (and Mr. Brown's) has been around for ages - in many different forms. I'm sure you can find versions of it in Corinda and Annemann's work. Bob Cassidy has an effect in Artful Mentalism that details a routine that can play the same way.

Having said that, the Becker & Earle effect does look good.

I can vouch for this in as much as a mate from work did "eye candy" on me and later told me it was as used by Derren Brown. He didnt disclose the workings of it, but it was done with a GQ magazine, so I can only guess its adaptable to any. If your credit card can wait until next week, I can confirm any details for you, or you could PM me and I'll forward your email/questions onto him..
Regards,
Dave

hmmm...i would say that wasn't derren's "thing"...

i dont like reverse engineering others work - especially derren's..we owe him alot...

i would say his principle/technique was different to eye candy...he did use newspapers...i bought something from eddie burke for eight quid that could technically achieve the same outcome...its an old Punx method...

i won't reveal the title of the effect, i shall let you go search...

feed someone or teach them to fish themselves? :P :D

I agree with abraxus. I don't think Derren used 'Eye Candy'. It's a similar effect, but, as Demitri said, there are lots of methods for this sort of thing.

I avoided buying 'Eye Candy', even when I saw it on sale for a very low price, because it sounded a little too limited for me.

I agree that Becker and Earle produce some excellent stuff, but a lot of it is a bit too USA-centric for me to use. It's fine for Americans of course!

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and he'll sit in a boat all day drinking beer...

Thanks, folks. I wasn't trying to reverse engineer anything; I just wanted to know if anyone thought this was the same effect that Derren peformed on stage. My intentions, as they say, were honourable.

Now, where did I leave my fishing rod and six-pack of Stellas...? ;)

I was under the impression that Derren's effect was based on a Berglas effect (and if I could get my mitts on his book I'd be a happy man!).
