Equity members receive £10,000,000 worth of public liability insurance if I'm right. Membership is around £120. You need to supply proof of 4 (I think) past contracts & another future one.

Although I'm sure you can't do £10,000,000 worth of damage with a deck of cards.

I'll second russpie - Equity is probably the cheapest route.

Go for Equity mate.

I was insured with Towergate last year for £5m, that cost me £236 for 12 months

Im now in Equity, a lot better value for money, plus the status of being in the union.

Yep, it's Equity all the way. Although you're not covered for stage hypnosis strangely enough.

By being a member of Equity you automatically receive PLI. Don't bother with the website. Phone up your local branch. They will explain everything to you including how to qualify for membership - something along the lines of evidence (invoices wil do) for four previous gigs.

But just to repeat - membership in Equity entitles you to PLI. You get it automatically. Your local branch will explain.

At what point do I need to consider Insurance

Postby The Last Deck on the Left » Oct 30th, '08, 14:15

Hi there,

I'm finally moving my magic up a gear and starting to look to getting some private bookings (close-up and strolling magic).

To date, I've just performed at charity functions, friends weddings and parties of friends or 'friends of friends'.

Is PL Insurance be something that I should have considered already (when performing outside of immediate family / friends) or just when money is exchanged for my magic services? (so far I've not had a paid gig and just done it for my own enjoyment and experience).

If I do need it, are there different levels of protection that I need to choose from?

Thanks,

The majority of restaurants, hotels etc now expect anybody performing on their premises to have PLI.. just the way the world's gone I guess!

It's worth it for your own peace of mind anyway, especially if your borrowing spectators personal belongings, rings etc!

As mentioned above Equity is your best bet providing you can prove you do magic professionally or semi professionally

I currently pay £80 per year for £2M public liability insurance. Joining Equity is more expensive and didn't really offer any extra benefits for me IMHO. My insurance was sorted by Towergate (performingarts@towergate.co.uk) or 0870 4115516
