Recommended Books/DVD section

Postby oscarno » May 21st, '08, 20:14

Real sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question - Im new here (though I'm not new to magic).

I was unsure if there's some kind of "Must have" or "Recommended" books or DVD section somewhere which would have all the classics listed for beginners and more advanced people. Things like "Complete Course in Magic", "Royal Road to Card Magic" and "13 steps to mentalism" to name a few, and perhaps things like Lennart Green's DVDs for the more advanced.

If there is a section like this, then please tell me where, and if there is a reason why not then I would love to know that too.

If there should be, then why not make one.

Thankyou for your time :)

P.S perhaps this list should be stickied for easy finding in the future

Hey there, maybe tell us, in detail, about what you've studied and your skill level so these reccomendations are easier to give?

Therer doesnt seem to be as recommended readng list as such, more a general concensus (SP?) of what people have accepted as the authority (and rightly so in my opinion) through various posts on the subject An essential reading/viewing list would be a great idea. I would personally nominate the following:
Reading:
Expert Card Technique, Huggard-(Intermediate/Advanced card book)
Cardshark-Darwin Ortiz-(Intermediate/Advanced card book)
Modern Coin Magic-Bobo (Beginner-Intermediate coins book)
Viewing:
Encyclopedia of Card Sleights, Daryl (Beginner-Advanced card DVD)
Easy to Master Card Miracles, Michael Amaar (Intermediate-Advance card DVD)

That'd be my contribution if a definative list were to be made!

Cheers :D Well the idea was to have more of a general "Classics/Must Have" section as I said before (In other words for all standards), and Im sure Im not the first one to have looked for something like this.

Rather than having to browse through several posts, the idea was just a "master" post.

I personally have done magic for about 10 years, and the latest things i have "perfected" (if i dare say that) all of Lennart Green's stuff, and most of Derren Brown's stuff from "The Devil's Picturebook".

Personally I havent been active in magic recently and am looking for something beyond beginners level (though as said before if this "list" were created, then give "advice" on books and DVDs for all levels and perhaps all genres if the topic blossoms far enough).

I am especially interested in learning more advanced mentalism (after finishing Derren's "Absolute Magic" - which would be a must read in my opinion).

Thanks

And thankyou thebigcheese  I haven't read some of them and will take the pleasure in doing so

I don't mean to be rude, but that actually made me involuntarily go "Hah!"

Thankfully I was alone, so nobody looked strangely at me.

It took a little bit of searching (but luckily I remembered who started the thread):

You know im gonna sound like a complete loser when i say this but I have no clue what you guys are going "Hah" at

If it's cause you think that Im a beginner who just looks at these things, then I "studied" (as well as Derren Brown), Docc Hilford, Tarbell, Sankey, Hugard, John Kennedy, Tamariz, and Erdenase to name a few that I can find in my bookcase right now.

Cheers :)

Don't know what makes you think I forgot it all though :?

We're not laughing AT you, more that "perfecting" all of Lennart Green's and Derren's stuff is near impossible!

Even if you've practised at home, it takes amazing dexterity and practise to even try to achieve some of their effects.

Oh lord no i wouldnt dream of claiming that for real  I was just trying to find a brief way of saying that i had been looking at the Green Magic DVDs and Derren Browns stuff. Though to be fair (after practicing for about 72 hours straig :) ) I can do the 3 card routine (only every time i perform it, I realize just after it finishes that I'm not allowed to stand up without ruining it for the audience - any suggestions?)

cheers :)
