Derren Brown Show

Postby philipsw » May 21st, '08, 22:53

This is a slightly odd request. I've got 2 tickets for DB on Saturday, but my wife is wondering whether or not she will get shocked by it. She is a delicate petal :-) Without wanting anyone to spoil the show for me before I see it (i.e. don't give anything about surprises away), if you have seen the new show, how 'dark' is it? Is there anything that might disturb someone who is easily disturbed? If so, I may have to find someone else to take...

I'll be able to tell you tomorrow as I have front row tickets for tomorrow nights show.
I was thinking of sitting there with 13 steps on my lap and at the reveal of each effect thumbing throught the book, nodding, showing the person sat next to me and then nodding/winking at Derren knowingly.

It's not dark at all and it certainly doesn't have the sceance or the broken glass routines like the last two shows. The first part is quite light and amusing especially the bits about....no, mustn't spoil it  !

Does he tour the states at all? I'd really like to see him.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I thought the second act was quite dark, eg naming departed loved ones. Guy was nearly crying when derren got that table out.

it's safe enough, when I saw him even the people getting picked out didn't get worried or anything, just a little wierded out.

How many in jokes are there in the show? I burst out laughing at his intro to his little table bit

I didn't think it was that dark really. Just really good! Saying that the second half is slightly darker than the first, but still not too dark.

I don't think your wife will like it at all. No, sirree. I, however, am not doing anything on Saturday. Yep, free as a bird, that's me. Just in case that information might help you.

:D

Thanks for the thoughts... and the offer :-)

I've asked another friend to come with me, because if I'm worrying about whether she's enjoying it all evening that will spoil it for me...

Can't wait!

Just to give a sense of completion I thought I ought to say - it was great!

What a performer.

But, and this is for anyone who has seen the show, on our night an audience member won £5000 - was that planned (because it was excellent misdirection for the next bit!)?

Don't think it was planned, on the night I went the person didn't win a bean!

Yeah I thought that for a bit but I doubt it was planned. I would have said £500 and lost sadly :(

On the night I saw it the guy chose incorrectly so didn't win anything either. I'm almost suprised that winning the £5000 was a genuine possibility!

Excellent show. Oddly though, for all the fantastic effects he did it was the gorilla reveal that has stayed with me most. :D

In reply to "was the winning of the £5000 rigged the answer is no.
I won the £5k at the Garrick. The trick is very simple, firstly throw the frisby to the very top where 2 types of people sit, firstly those that do not want to get involved thus sit out of the way, and secondly those seats are some of the least expensive (which is why I was sitting there).

OK so we have targeted the 'Don't want to join in' or the poorer members of the audience.
point 2 , who would realy believe that they would give away £5000 so your mindset is already on the 'Its £500'
Point 3 Derren is a master maniplator and I have seen him get people to change their minds 3-4 times overjavascript:emoticon('')
Twisted Evil .

So its no longer a 50-50 chance. I still believe the only way I got it right and won it was due to not listening to a word Derren was talling me, and just sticking to the reverse logic that if no one believes its £5K then tht'l be the box he had brought out

The show is brilliant, and I'm still trying to figure out the spectators friend revealing the serial number on the bank note?? I've got an idea how I'd do it, but I doubt its the same!!

We went to see it in Leicester, and me and my wife got there early so we could have a drink before the show.

It was a sunny evening so we sat outside on the grass and who was there next to us? Only the great man himself, who was sat with Andy Nyman and Andrew O'Connor! :D
