"Know your audience" would be another key point to getting good reactions. No point in doing stigmata to a group of old ladies who are going to say, "ooh, you've scratched yourself you silly boy", likewise a drawn out card routine in which whole suites are dealt out etc. is hardly going to go down well at the local youth club. Yet both might be "good effects" performed well.
