David Blaine's autograph, anyone?

Postby queen of clubs » May 24th, '08, 16:06

I just noticed that MagicBox are selling a limited supply of Blaine's "Split Spades" cards autographed by the tedious misery himself.

I'm not interested, but I thought I'd post this incase there are any fans out there who might want to grab themselves one. They're a tenner

Davenports have been the same thing for ages. It was a lot more expensive there though.

Do they also sell a blank personal cheque signed by the tedious misery himself?

Sorry - as he's American, I should have spelled that 'check'...

Anyway, I'd pay a tenner for that. :)

Anyone considering these decks should wait a bit longer. They'll be giving them away shortly.

That tedious misery single-handedly saved magic from the land of the white rabbit and sparkly waist-coat. Without David Blaine there would have been no Derren Brown. Think on (as we say in Sheffield).

Derren Brown (1998) has been on around as nearly as long as David Blaine (1996) and Paul Zenon (1990) was around before David Blaine.

See www.imdb.com for who was on tv first.

Blaine just americanized magic, in his own boring way. The same way that people beileve sitcoms started with Friends.

Stop putting down UK influeces.

Just my morning rant.

I prefer Darren when he has a good sense of humour about what he does. The first few series of his I remember were excellent. It was like watching a stand up comedian, who happened to do magic. Not so keen on the Blaine type stunts. I was in London when he did the box stunt. Didn't exactly make for gripping entertainment.

The Magic Attic - personally I could care less whether someone is American or British. Does it really matter? Yes, Paul Zenon was doing the "street magic" thing a long time before Blaine, but he was hardly setting the world on fire was he? Unlike Blaine. For whatever reason, Blaine gave magic a huge shake up and a tremendous boost with "Street Magic" and "Magic Man". His nationality doesn't come into it. What does come into it is the fact that he had that "spark" that others didn't. And it was the fact that Blaine's TV shows (Street Magic & Magic Man) were so succesful on Channel 4 that allowed them to be confident about commisioning Derren Brown's first series.

Jobasha - Derren Brown? Stand up comedian? I don't really follow I'm afraid. I'm only a poor psychic.

Since themagicwand is a mentalist, I won't type this. He will know what I'm thinking.

I'm not sure I could ever buy an autograph. It's not the same as actually meeting somebody and having a chat and then getting it.
I'll stick with my signed coffee cup from Derren :D

That's true. I have Dan and Dave Buck's autographs but they don't really mean anything because I've never met them - the Tricks DVD just came in the post signed for some reason.

I'm not a huge fan of Blaine's style, but I think Paul's right. David Blaine got magic back on TV and back in the spotlight. It wasn't just that he did magic, his presentation was fresh (although I didn't care for it hugely).

Derren Brown's first TV show was at the very end of 2000, I think. It's hard to guess whether or not 'Mind Control' would have been commissioned without David Blaine going before, but I wouldn't blithely dismiss Mr Blaine's influence in getting that show on our screens.
