A presentation I'm working on...

Postby queen of clubs » Jun 19th, '08, 20:35

I've been working on my own version (tribute, whatever) of Shawn Farquhar's amazing Shape of My Heart performance.

I made this video this morning to show my progress so far. It's a work-in-progress and it's not polished, but I wanted to post it here because I feel like throwing myself to the lions.

I could have re-shot it 20 times until I got it perfect, but I decided I'd post the first take, since in performance you only get one go - which is proved by the fact I sign the card on camera, no second chances, hehe.

Enough excuses, here you go... CLICKNESS

i have an idea...may not be a good one, but an idea regardless...

instead of turning over the 4 suits as they get mentioned in the song, there seems to be time to perform 4 sl**-c**s...well, maybe...or something similar...

might be nice visually at least, to cut to the four different suits rather than just turn them over and put them back in the back...

i must admit, i very didnt see that sharpie on the bed for the first few seconds...

You have a really strong start here, Kate...excellent work.

I'm not sure about adding something between the Aces. There's very little time between the lyrics to add something in - and I think you would risk the elegance of the effect if you toss in some quick cuts. Everything is smooth and slow - to add speed at this particular moment would be jarring, at least for me.

Although you're still early in your development, you have some exceptional sequences in here. Your handling is perfect (That Oz Pearlman shuffle is a killer!), and I can't make any comments on technique. Beyond being flawless in execution, you are far more skilled on the old pasteboards, so to call attention to any faults would be like giving tips to Tiger Woods on his short game.

I also have to say the king sequence is stunning. I would even say that I find your solution to this section stronger than Shawn's. You actually keep the magic in line with the lyrics - and the vanish of the king is just a thing of beauty. That's one of the cleanest changes I have ever seen. Fantastic work.

I can't wait to see how you finish this routine. If I may have one request - please don't end it on the cards from mouth. I always thought that kind of ruined the routine. Cards from mouth is a nice effect and all (though I'm not a fan of it), but it just never sat well with me in that presentation.

What other ideas did you have for the finish?

Keep it up - outstanding work.

I like I like! Like Demitiri says, what other ideas have you got for a big finish and such?

I was thinking of doing my own version of this too but I found a song that might make it a touch easier (it's not motorhead):

Plus you wont have to listen to Stings annoying wailings

Good work so far though Queen of Clubs

Im pretty sure you can't. Kate has posted elsewhere of her foes of trying to work it out.

Beautiful work! You are clearly getting there. I forgot the original version by Shawn Farquhar, but I think the sequence between the aces are produced the first time and second time is somewhat different. I think its important that its also striking and surprising when the aces occur the second time. Maybe Shawn lost the aces in a different way?

Did you try to contact Shawn? I would expect that he will be happy to help giving you some tips. Anyway since it is his effect is it maybe also a good idea to clear the air and ask if he mind that you work on his effect and use it in your shows (who knows if you progress like this maybe nation television).

Anyway I am looking forward to watch the next update on you version.

Magic is slight of mind!

It looks great. But id have to agree with Ians comment regarding the aces.
after you turn over the second ace, the audience will know whats comming. Therefore, the routine looses just a wee bit of impact.
by changing teh method in which you reveal teh aces, you build the momentum up.

Thanks for the second burst of comments on this vid :)

I'm trying not to over-think the routine - I'm looking at it from the POV of a spectator. I've only shown this to two people and neither of them seemed unimpressed when the aces were turned over the second time.

The effect cannot be bought from Shawn, but as I'm an amateur I'm not worried about getting his permission. If ever I perform for money I'll not do this routine because I respect it's Shawn's creation and concept, but privately it's a different thing. I may even start telling people it's based on a routine by Shawn Farquhar whenever I show it to people in future - even if they immediately forget his name at least I'll have done my bit ;)

Soren: Shawn's routine is also different in that he performs to the entire song - mine fades out at the half-way point so it's more of a quickie. He segues into an ACR with card-to-mouth and cards-from-mouth, too, which is lovely. I prefer to keep ACR out of it, as one of my most polished routines is my ACR, so I'd never be able to perform it in the same session as this demonstration if I developed this video further.

Incidentally, I'm a lot smoother now than I was at the time I made that vid. The cuts where I rotate the top packet were fairly poorly performed on the vid above and I've now developed the handling so the packet doesn't break anymore during the rotation.

I just love watching this type of presentation. I've seen a few on t'interweb and on a couple of instances have felt really quite moved (in a manly way).

The best versions are kept simple and smooth and flow with the music. I liked your version very much Kate.

Greedoniz - I nearly wet myself with your comment. Superb.
