I saw that on the sci-fi channel. Bunch of bulls**t if you ask me. I just don't understand why people believe in ufos and aliens. What I want to know is why do the aliens people claim to have seen look so humanoid? Surely the odds of life on another planet are big enough without having them look like us. They haven't been abducted, they were having a dream. It's called sleep peralysis, my dad's had it a couple of times, basically you're awake, can't move and you're hallucinating. In a nutshell having a dream while you're awake. Case closed. I've just saved the FBI and CIA and special services and the paranormal response unit (if that even exists) a whole bunch of time. Now they can spend time doing something useful, instead of faffing about with silly conspiracies.

I guess we only have a couple of years to find out what the skulls have to say.

Ironicaly, the british museum keep their skull on display next to the toilets.

I was half wanting to see the Channel 5 programme, and there was certainly nothing much else on TV at the time. But there weren't any subtitles (promised, but technical faults), so my husband couldn't enjoy it. We ended up watching Zoo Story instead.

The current issue of the Fortean Times (issue 237, June 2008) has a good feature article about the various crystal skulls around the world. Like most FT articles, it's thoroughly researched and well balanced, and has the reasonable opinion that understanding why people want to believe in ancient supernatural artifacts is just as interesting as whether or not the artifacts actually exist in the first place.

They look like us because that's where we come from. We are all children of the stars. Well, most of us anyway...

However the crystal skulls are of course fakes and were manufactured in the 1800's and 1900's. As an experienced hoaxer myself I say "hurray!" for the folk who duped museums in London, New York and Paris. More power to yer elbow!

If we're all children of the stars why don't we look like snakes or whales or beetles or any other animal except for primates?

Not quite sure what the question is here. We don't look like snakes or whales or beetles because we're not snakes or whales or beetles.

Or, did you mean why don't aliens look like whales etc? Well, again, because they're not...etc...

We look like aliens because it was an alien race that seeded the earth. I think. I wasn't there, you understand. It's just a pet theory. I'm not sure, but I may be a Scientologist by mistake.

This whole topic is getting a bit confusing and philosophical, let's just agree that whatever you believe in is right.

Why are the skulls fake? Is it becouse we try not to believe that a previous race was more advanced then us?

No, they're fake because they were crafted in the 19th and 20th centuries. I take no pleasure in saying that - I'm all for esoteric beliefs - but sometimes things are just good old fashioned fakes and hoaxes.

Personally I take great comfort from the fact that for 100 years people trooped into museums around the world and for just a moment had their minds expanded by the crystal skulls. People looked at them in awe and tried to imagine just what kind of people made them and what their civilisation was like. At that point it didn't matter if they were authentic or not.

I know, I know. I'm just weird.

This can neither be proven or disproven. The quartz used in most of the skulls is inherently going to prove to be 'ancient' by any test, as even carbon dating etc. would prove the age to be inconclusively old.

Secondly, scientists have tried to identify what tools could have sculpted the skulls—in order to place them on a timeline. However, if they *were* fakes, the fakers would just have used old-style tools to make them look fake.
Moving that theory along, toolmarks would also be inconclusive in providing an origin.

And thirdly—we cannot dismiss *any* theory as to how the skulls came about, and how/who/where/what. Science is logical and finite, and dismisses things which generally can't be explained.

I once bought a piece of ginger root that looked almost exactly like the Sta-Puft marshmallow man, and yet I didn't believe it was an effigy.

Until there's evidence of the origins of the skulls, I like to wallow in the romance of believing that our origins may not be entirely Darwinian in their simplicity... Science deals in black and white, whilst discovery and hope lie in the grey area in between.

I understand that that under close examination the tooling used was not available until the 19th Century. The skulls examined were tooled on laithes (or whatever - big spinny wheels), and the quartz was not native to south america. Hey, maybe they're authentic aztec (or whatever). I'm happy either way.
