Thomas Wayne's Coffee Cup Chop Cup

Postby Mr Toucan » Jul 5th, '08, 21:09

Hi,

I've heard about this a few times now but search as I may, I can't seem to find one anywhere. Can anyone tell me if they're still produced and if so who sells them?

Cheers,

James

I don't know about that particular model, but there's a widesly available Chop Mug available through many online stores.

My google search gave me this as a first hit.

Hope that helps,

Pete

Ah... reading a bit further, the Chop Mug description says:

"Designed and produced with permission from Thomas Wayne, creator of the original concept."

Mark Leveridge sold a chop mug back in the early to mid eighties. Do we know when Wayne first made them?

Take care, Ian

It wouldn't take long for Mrs dat to be serving toffee to her friends in one of these

On a serious note, I suspect that the final coin load in the video wouldn't just 'talk', it would seriously 'shout'. Metal coins in that quantity loaded into a ceramic cup wouldn't work too well in the real world me thinks.

However, there must be a whole shed load of routines to put together with creamers, packet sugars, tea bags etc. and you'll only need to gimmick one.

Not bad for £20 either

Hey guys,

I make the above chop mugs, and that's me in the video.

Any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

The final coin load with the coins doesn't ‘talk’. They coins are actually in a gimmick, and are no different to load than a regular final load.

Obviously I can't post the description here, but if you want to p.m me, I’ll explain.

Regards

It's a simple gimmick that anyone can make in seconds, blatently obvious if you think about it.

Long ago in my youth (believe it or not, we actually did have cars then, but cable Tv was new... the idea of a personal computer still off in the distance somewhere). I'd come up with a chop cup routine... memory serving me right, it was first published in the original MAGIC Newsletter (before Stan turned it into an actual magazine), that was only after I'd used it for some time.

Essentially, I used a Styrofoam coffee cup... preferably one that came from the establishment or event I was working at... the ball(s) used were either rolled up napkins or borrowed dollar bills with the final load being whatever fruit, veggie or other large odd object I could get my hands on.

The beauty of the whole bit was that after all was done, you could literally tear the cup to pieces and find absolutely nothing as far as tattle-tales would be concerns.

As to the Coffee Mug... I've always enjoyed watching others work it over the more common "magic prop" looking cups. The exception being of course, when working with a Cups & Balls combo set. But then I've always had this thing about doing magic (especially close up and the spooky stuff) that seemed natural and a matter of happenstance.

DO NOTE: this was long before things like PK Rings or even the original PK Effect type systems were introduced. Though some slight-of-hand was involved, it was minimal... same as what you'd find in a traditional chop cup handling, and generally speaking every single thing used for working it can be found in most anyone's home... at least back in those days, some things have changed in out modern-times.
