Little round spongy things...

Postby Mark Waddington » Jul 11th, '08, 08:38

Just a completely random question to be honest.

Ive been doing the sponge rabbits since the dawn of time, but ive never actually owned or used standard sponge balls.

So my question/s

Soft, or super soft?

And if you could have any colour in the world, what would you choose?

Only my personal experience, but Mr Goshman's balls are somewhere in-between.

Other people's balls are going to vary, I'd guess, but I like Goshman's.

I would advise to buy 3 of each! There not expensive and you could decide whether you like soft balls or super soft ones!

Personally, I only use Super Soft as I have just become use to them, don't really seem a point to have less soft!

I think red is a great colour, simply because...well there is no real reason. The majority of spongeballs are red so I guess it's doing something right!

I use Green when I can, just a personal thing but colour always is!

I've never really found one 'softness' better than the other for performing. I like super soft because I prefere the feel of them but as performing goes I don't think there's any difference. As for colour, for me it's pink (if you couldn't guess).

Red or green for me.

Mark, this is a question that has flumoxed me since the dawn of time. I like Goshman super soft myself, I'm not too keen on the firmer Goshman ones (like you get in the Spongeball Toolkit), I don't find them any harder to work with, I just don't like the feel of them.

From a practical point of view, for my sponge ball finale, the audience member helping me ends up with 12 one and a half inch sponge balls in their hand instead of the 3 they think they have, and the firmer balls just leave too much of a buldge in my trouser pockets. The super soft ones, on the otherhand, don't.

I think the firmer balls are a litle hardier, and may well last longer, but I'll stick to my super soft, thanks very much.

I like Goshmans regular, I do not like super soft. I like the springyness of the regular ones. They almost jump out of the spectators hand.

Just a little detail about colors i would like to notice everyone.

Some people dont see colors very well, i dont know the english name for it but we say daltonien in french. Those peoples cannot distinguish red from green at all because the pigmentation of those colors is the same.

I thought it would be important to say so since i often saw green and red balls in magic shows and it seem to become a fashion.

The term in english is "colorblind" and that's a fair point, although I don't see why that should stop anyone from using red or green balls. Although if you have red AND green balls, you might want to see a doctor.

Actually you would be better with four of each to do a routine

i use only 2 in my routine but I think you buy them in packs of four right?

My routine is a very simple quick and dirty routine and I use it as an opener sometimes.

Also I go for 2 inch super soft though the other type are more like the bunnies (IB I know)

Go for black, they have a unique look.

Generally, I prefer super soft, as I think they are more versatile. However, they can take longer to recover shape, when they've been in a pocket for a while, and some sleights are a little bit more difficult with very soft sponges.

You could do what Eugene Burger does and buy regular density sponge balls, then give them a soak in hot water to break them down a bit, but not so much that they end up as squishy as super soft ones.

As to colour, whatever suits your needs. I'd suggest avoiding yellow, because they'll not only get dirty fast, but look it too. I'm not sure about black; it's not a very exciting colour for the eye. I prefer red or blue.

I used to do strolling magic with 2 super-soft balls that were 2".
Now I use 2 soft balls that are 1.5".

Takes up less room, more springy, stay round better.

Someone did try recently to convince me to use 2 3" super-soft balls.
I'll try that and see how it goes.

A vanish with a larger ball is more compelling to watch.

This thread is getting a lot of different opinions guys!!

My sponge rabbits are the soft type, not super soft, but they arent as big as sponge balls.

Im confuzzled

Im thinking the verdict is either 1.5" or 2" soft balls, and im thinking green, as its a nice contrasting colour.

Im also tempted to buy some 3" ones in an attempt to work a stage routine, ala Wayne Dobson
