Real Psychic verses Psycological trickery.

Postby magicmindben » Jul 22nd, '08, 19:42

I present my mentalism only as Psychological Trickery and the likes.
I have noticed that many present it as REAL Psychic powers, even if it is as far from that as a swami gimmick.
Personaly, i find it is wrong to present myslef in that way. But that is my personal opinion I want to know your's

I want to know other people's thoughts on which they present themselves as, (real psychic or not), and what their/your opinion is on the subject.

I have decided to abstain from this discussion on the grounds that I already know what is going to happen. The cards have foretold it. Death, the Tower, and the Nine of Swords. A spread like that never ends well.

as a psychic and a magician and once many moons ago a card carrying charlaton, were does that leave me, well i'll tell you.

when I'm being a magician thats what i am.
when I'm doing a reading, I don't say either way unless asked as I'm not sure which skill I'm using.
if I'm doing a psychic party dishing the dirt on a mark who dosn't know all his friends are in on it then I'm a card carrying, i see dead people, psychic.
if I'm doing a psychic party with open minded individuals who have booked me as a psychic, then thats what I am, I don't use any trickery that I'm aware of.

when I'm standing in front of a crowd of several preconditioned people, hearing dead people through my two way earpiece, wile the clollection plate mounts up......
well i havant done that for 20 odd years..... but if i was then i'd definatly be a charlaton of the first order and the best in the business, because I would truly belive..... wooo stepped into an episode of the serpent and the rainbow there for a second too.

it all depends on if you go with the hollywood definition of what psychic means...

and before this discussion starts, may i ask that none of you mix up the differences between psychic abilities and mediumship...

let battle commence!

I'll be honest Ben, from the content of your other posts, I strongly doubt your at the level to perform Mentalism properly and claim to be using psychological trickery at all!

I'm not sure how old you are, but the wise Craig Browning has often said that if you are still young, you can go about making out that you have some kind of a gift, it is a lot believable in somebody young!

Finally, if I were to perform Mentalism as my main material and really have people asking, I would be Derren-esque and say I use Psychology, Suggestion, Hypnotism, Sleight Of Hand and Showmanship. Or whatever he says.

Look closer. Was it the Nine of Swords or the Non of Puberties?

Do you know Katie, I do believe you have "the gift". Or "the curse" as we psychics call it.

Magicmindben is I fear not so cursed as we.

Whenever I perform mentalism-esque effects with cards (I am NOT a mentalist, hence the new word menatlism-esque), I take the patter of "reading tells",(which of course fits in with my "character") as well as some subtleties I found on the Devil's picturebook that seem to have enhanced these particular effects. Bear in mind, I only use 3 effects where I appear to "read tells", so this very small window of patter I use is just enough to cover all of them.

Death, Tower & Nine of Swords. I saw it all. In my new funky hybrid deck! :D (That's a mentalist section in-joke).

I used to be very concerned about this issue - or at least as far as my own claims went.

But I finally resolved that if a magician can link steel rings together without the need for a disclaimer stating that he can't really link steel rings together, then I should be allowed to read minds with a clear conscience.

So there.

It's not about the disclaimer.
When the magcian links the ringgs together the audience knows its a trick, whereas an audince might more easily believe you have true psychic powers. I personally belive it is immoral to do such things. Just not to the grounds that I will argue against other entertainers about using that claim.

But you aren't really using psychological techniques. People might believe that it's an amazing subject, and the key to manipulating behaviour and understanding everything (which it sort of is, but not in the way psychological illusionists portray it).

So, you're a liar too.
