If you really want to learn all about the standard 3 card monte and all (well most) of it's variations, then I can thoroughly recommend "Daryl Does the Full Monte" (By Daryl funnily enough).

Theres a review I think.

if you look hard enough on the internet there are tips for the classic monte. To be honest i cant believe how well it works! also if you switch in a bit of psychology they will get it wrong every time. No matter what!

About Monte

Postby altacartomagia » Jan 20th, '04, 20:41

Hi.
Monte, or Bonneteau, or Trile, is an ancient game, having roots in common with the cups and balls.
As we know it today, appears to have been born at the dawn of the XIXth century. The reason is the apparition of the cards as we know them today, wich allowed the tosser, or broad tosser, to perform the moves and the bending and unbending of the corners.
Several sources can be pointed to learn it in its original form. Not named in this trend, there are two very important: Expert At the Card Table by Erdnase, Vernon Inner Card Secrets Series.
Of course, nowadays we have a gazillion variations, some worthy, some worthy of forgiveness. You can find them a Daryl's video, Easy to Master Card Miracles from Ammar, and almost every card magician has a version of it.

So, good luck with your learning, and, last but not least, a presentation tip: always present the Monte as a story, never challenge the spectator. The reason is that the only way monte could work is if the spectator REALLY trys to follow the odd card. If not, he/she can:
a) Try at random, and possibilities are against the tosser,
or
b) Point on purposse on an aparently wrong card, and again, possibilities are against the tosser.
Of course, you have the Mexican Turnover and the Paul Curry, among others, to change the card. But its difficult to do it rightly when you are being closely watched.
Magic is like hipnotism, it cant be do if spectator doesnt allow you to.

I must admit, i've been having fun with Temptation, the new Gordon Bean Monte, because it's very visual, easy and not a challenge effect, as in, the spectator never has to point out the odd card.

I quite like colour monte, but I do the same patter ideas with normal cards. The only problem is that it is a little impersonal, it has an entertaining story but there is really no invilvement for the specs.

Cogito, ergo sum.
Cogito sumere potum alterum.

I'm a big fan of colour monte and use it all the time when I work. One of the advantages is that because there is a story to the routine it avoids the element of challenge betweenthe magician and spectator - hence the spectator never feels that he loses. It largely depends if you are after entertainment, or an out and out gambling routine where the magician always wins. Further, the cards can all be examined at the end, which is unlike some montes on offer.

i now have temptation.
i really like it. also you get two gimmicks which is pretty useful if people think you are using gaff cards because they are different suits.
i love this one, doing it in the hands is nice and easy and all the moves are simple.
now i have to find a wallet to hold my precious new cards.
