IV'E GOT A CAR!

Postby crozboz » Aug 3rd, '08, 20:56

As about 10 of you will know already - as I texted everyone in my contact list as soon as I got it - I have a car.

I got it last sunday evening - its a Renault Clio - and was completely free. My next door neighbours were going to get it scrapped. I mentioned I wanted a car, and they gave it to me!

Alas, it does need a little fixing up. But - I emptied my bank account to pay for that and insurance for a 17 year old male driver and its now road legal.

Only problem is - Im not. Still 16 for now. And havent had a lesson yet. But im getting there - only 11 weeks and 4 days till I turn 17 - but it'll be here before we know it.

I am after a personalised registration number which will set me back another £150 - but I just want the registration number CR0 5813 so much (Crosbie - for those of you who dont know me).

I am now only performing magic for money - which is fine really, as im going on a cruise ship in 2 weeks with tips galore!

Now - does anyone know where I can get a playing card/magic themed air freshner, or a nodding michael ammar to sit in the front window?

All the best,
Croz

You only have 10 friends?! :D

Please don't! My reasons: a) I'll laugh at you if you do and b) Honestly Croz, trust me on this: save that £150 for when you need a new catalytic converter, a new lambda sensor, new wishbones, a couple of new tyres, a few tanks of petrol etc! Cars drink money and they are thirsty little buggers...

I have more than 10 friends, but I dont have all their numbers. 10 friends on here.

I should be OK Farls, Im getting about £2000 for these 2 weeks on board. That should last me a year or two with the car.

All the best,
Croz

Have fun Croz, it's amazing how much easier having a car makes life. I really feel for you with the insurance cost, I remember what I had to pay when I passed at 21 and I'm a girly. Must silly for a 17 year old lad.

I'm actually on the hunt for a new car myself, my baby's getting poorly and it's costing more and more to keep her running.

That should last you 2 years insurance and no more, providing you live in a nice area and only want 3rd party, fire and theft. Unless you're going to pull a naughty and insure it in your folks' name... ;)

Then there's petrol at what in a small car will probably be cheap at £40 per tank, two sets of MOTs at £60 if there's no work to be done to it (and if the previous owners were honestly thinking of scrapping it, you can almost guarantee there will be something "small" to be done each and every MOT)

Oh, and what's road tax at the moment - £200 a year for a small car like that?

Edit: Sorry Croz, I'm not trying to pi$$ on your strawberries! Your first car is very exciting - still remember getting my little black fiesta with only four gears - so have fun with it and give lots of lifts to lots of pretty girls! But please do be sensible with your money - all it takes is a funny clunking sound one day and suddenly you're £400 poorer!

Though I got my first car about a year ago, I passed a few months ago. It has been so great having a car. I can get to work without relying on others, I can go out where and whenever I want and I can give back to all those that have given me lifts. The freedom is great!

But, as mentioned, the cost of running a car for the first few years is insane!
And I am sure, by the time we build up our no claims to get cheaper insurance, petrol and tax will have increased so much that it won't make much difference.

Lets just hope there isn't too much that needs doing to it. Good luck for when you start taking lessons.

(Btw, I drive a '95 VW Polo, fantastic car.)

3rd part fire & theft is just over £800 for the year.

17 year old males and all that jazz.

I should be ok for a while, especially since ive got a few more magic jobs on cruises etc. and ive now got a part time job as an usher at the local theatre. £6.67/hour, not bad going.

Hum I really need to get lessons...I'm 17 too.

Yeah 6.67 is not bad at all, adults who have to provide for a family are on that pay.
I work at a hospital, basic rate is 6.27, but I work weekends. NHS is really good, the pay time and a half saturdays @ 9.47 an hour, and double time Sundays @ 12.54 an hour. I work 13 hour shifts saturday and sunday and works out at over 250 pound a week, for working two days!

I think that's going to be my job now that sounds great.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Congratulations.

I'm still carless at 28, I lived in London for a few years & didn't need one, now I live in the centre of the city & only need one for magic purposes. I hire one & it comes out of the company bank account so the magic pays for it. I'll be looking to buying one in the next year I reckon & will be coming here for advise when this happens.

Let's hope you pass that test.

your insurance is cheap!

Mine this year was just shy of £700 and that's with 3 years no claims and I'm 28.

My first insurance bill was £1300 or something, Manchester eh? I need to live some where more car crime friendly
