Hello folks

I figured I should play by the rules and do the introduction thing.

I'm not a capable magician. I've had the bug for a while but mostly in an 'interested observer' phase rather than anything more involved. My main interest is in sleight of hand and how misdirection and playing with people's expectations can work to create effects.

I doubt I'll ever become a performer because I don't really have the guts to jump in the deep end and start embarrassing myself with my lack of experience in front of others. Especially since I know that just being able to perform a trick isn't enough.

I also play the violin and I have many many years of practice behind me there so it's quite a change to be all clumsy and new trying to pick up new skills. It's fun though. I'm working my way (slowly) through The Royal Road to Card Magic.

Anyway this seems like a nice place although I'll probably mostly lurk, at least to begin with.

Oh yeah, I'm female, 27 and live in Scotland.

Hi and welcome! Many of the members on TM are in exactly the same category as yourself so here you'll be amongst friends. Of course we now have quite a few lady members who keep us on our toes with threats of shin kicking and other forms of (probably justfied) physical violence from time to time....

Hehe, I'm a software engineer by trade so I'm quite used to being outnumbered.

As far as shin kicking goes, I can do one better. I do historic western martial arts style sword fighting, so I know my way around blades quite nicely. :D

Software engineer, nice. Being thinking of self-learning C#/C++ but don't have the chance, but many of my friends are in to it, mostly reverse engineering and coding 'hacks/cheats' for online games though.

I also do martial arts, Jeet Kune Do, Military Defence and Mixed Martial Arts. Mixed martial arts is which UFC/Cage fighting is based upon.

And! I'm also in the similar position to you in the magic category, I was pretty good with my hands, and was pretty knowledgeable of the subject when i was around 15, Just haven't touched it since, I'm now 17 and going to make the effort to get back in to it!

I loves me some good martial arts now and then too! Maybe we can develop a style of magic using the martial arts? Anyway, you will find that here on the forums, embarrassing yourself is almost key. Or at least that is what I have found so far. Magic is supposed to be fun, so why not have a few laughs while at it?

I wanted to get into kendo, and am still looking into any open dojos nearby, but I am in a tiny town.

Feel free to ask me any questions, I will answer for what it is worth... Which probably won't be much but I like to feel special

Hiya, always great to see another girlie around, there's starting to be quite a few of us on here now.

What sort of violin do you play? I was classical trained but now only really play folk fiddle.

I'm abit of a martial artist too, used to do quite a bit of kickboxing and taku kon karate, had to stop because of injuries though. I keep myself fit through running and swimming now.

Anyway, welcome to TM, good to have you here :D

I'm feeling very welcome now, thanks everyone.

You could probably develop a style of magic using swords and martial arts. Not something I'd go into since I'm currently just into the quiet little sleight of hands, mostly cards.

As for the fiddle, I actually started out classical as well and have now mostly swapped over into folk music.

I did classical for around 10 years and then the practice requirements and dedication needed to improve was just too much when I needed to do normal school as well and wanted to have the possibility of a social life.

Folk music is easier on a hobbyist really. I live in Scotland so I play a lot of Scottish folk music but my favourite to play is actually American Bluegrassy type folk music, it has more swing in the rythm which I enjoy. I also really enjoy blues and swing on the violin but the improv is hard to to consistently, Stephen Grappelli is one of my idols.

Card on sword! Sorry couldn't resist lol. I have however seen a lady do a card on heel of a shoe though!

Well, think of it this way, everyone starts off knowing one trick, so that's nothing to be embarassed about. Just practice and take your time, and most importantly, enjoy yourself!

Sæl Sica og hjartanlega velkomin á TalkMagic-vefinn! :)

For you Ingleez zpeeking population, what you see in the two messages above is genuine Elfish, North Territorial accent.

It's in general about two places is England where you can read the villagers minds and basic tutoring in how to succeed in mind reading.

Tooteloo!
