Buy Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. Huge book, cheap and has hundreds of effects and close up sleights. You can't go wrong with it!

A very effective card effect is "Out of this world" I just love it. It's impromptu and very strong whilst being really clean aswell.

Actually there are a lot of great magicians that are Canadian. As for a closer it depends on your routine.

My only advice to a newbie is to go hunt around in your local library. You'll find at least one or two beginner books on magic that'll give you plenty of simple tricks and an idea about what sort of magic you like, plus it's free.

Card tricks are a great place to start, and as for names, "Gemini Twins" requires no setup as is practically self working. "Biddle Trick" relies on one simple sleight and gets great reactions. Both can be found in "Royal Road To Card Magic" which most people view as a beginners bible.

Good luck!

I've given you one of the best pieces of advice if you want to go into close up magic, I suggest you look for it!

You can get your hands on a copy at most bookstores, usually on the shelf but otherwise on special order.

After you make it past beginner, you'll likely have to start buying from magic shops, and for a good many of us that means online.

If you have a basic knowledge of magic, which I don't know if you do, than the penguin magic downloads are just re-workings of old effects.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Obviously you've got an internet connection (or you wouldn't be here), so check Amazon. They have Mark Wilson's Complete Course, The Royal Road to Card Magic, and Bobo's Modern Coin Magic all for just dirt cheap. Even cheaper if you don't mind buying secondhand.
