Personality analysis (experiment)

Postby smoked salmon » Aug 15th, '08, 16:34

Wondering if someone could help me.

I'm looking for the text that was used in a psychology experiment, where everyone was given a personality analysis (apperantly based on their answers in a survey - but in reality everyone got the same answer), and asked to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10.

It is named in "Quirkology", but someone has borrowed my copy

What was the name of the experiment/the person conducting the experiment? Or do you have a link to the text?

I don't know ofthe specific text you're talking about, but I do have the complete text of Derren's version which he used on his TV show. He re-prints it in the book Tricks of the Mind.

I think your thinking of the bertram experiment??

If so ............

You have a need for other people to like and admire you, and yet you tend to be critical of yourself. While you have some personality weaknesses you are generally able to compensate for them. You have considerable unused capacity that you have not turned to your advantage. Disciplined and self-controlled on the outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure on the inside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You also pride yourself as an independent thinker; and do not accept others' statements without satisfactory proof. But you have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. At times you are extroverted, affable, and sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, and reserved. Some of your aspirations tend to be rather unrealistic.

Is there a place where I can buy tricks of the mind in the states?

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Wow, its stocked absolutely everywhere here. You can even find it in Woolworths (General Store) and HMV (music/video shop), both of whom only have a limited section of books, usually reserved to chart books and pop reading.

Have a look online, otherwise try buying from an English site and then last resort, ask someone on here to send you a copy. That shouldnt be necessary though, you'll prob find tons on ebay.

I always get drawn into off topic conversations.

Back on topic then. I think the version of the read-out given in Derren Brown is much longer and detailed than the one shown here. Its also aimed at a particular age group but being so detailed, it may not apply so well to people of different cultures, countries and environments.

Nice one Ian, good buy. Although probably more so for beginners and newcomers perhaps...
I guess Channel 4 books don't publish in the US.

Fairie - I thought i could remember something about it working in different countries. But i'd imagine the social culture in those different countries would've been pretty similar to ours. Not that you'd need to use it in Asia or the Amazon, but i think some of those places might be quite different.
But for all intents and purposes, it's probably fine and the level of depth is fantastic.

Even if it's for beginners sounds like a good read and for $10 or a "fiver" I couldn't go wrong.

A fiver. Learning the lingo i see.
From my perspective, it was a very good book covering the ground basics of magic, presentation and performance, the psychology, memory, etc. Although this is not the place for a review, I hope you can get a lot from it after the effort made to get a copy.
I just didn't much like his overly pronounced dislike of belief and faith...

Anyways. Did the author of this post get the answer they wanted or is there still more needed?
