Die in box prediction

Postby Figaro » Aug 24th, '08, 16:59

Hello everyone!

im pretty new here. so dont cut my weener off if I do something wrong, but i had a quick question;

Have you ever heard of the Die in box prediction? I cant find it anywhere.

its similair to the die cypher trick i guess. only this one is bigger, and made out of wood. also comes with a wooden box. i know how it works, but i dont think i can expose it here.

it goes like this;

you give the box and the die to a spectator, you turn around and they can put any number on top, then with your back still turned, you announce what number theyve chosen. works everytime.

I would love to have one of those, I dont have the knowledge to build one.

oh yeah, the trick also features in derren browns Pure Effect book.

anyone know where i can find one or build one?

thank you very much.

Hi Figaro.

Welcome to the forum.

I might be wrong, but are you a Derren Brown fan who happens to be trying to learn a bit about magic? Your username is a bit of a giveaway!

There are a number of similar props to the one described. However, I think that they are often not worth the trouble. The suppliers of such items can be very unreliable. The apparatus itself can be too. It might not work at just the wrong moment. You've read 'Pure Effect', and you know what Derren ended up doing.

Perhaps I am wrong, and you are a very experienced magician (it's a good idea to post an introduction if the first thing you do is ask where you can find a particular trick), but I think you should wait before trying to buy one of these. Why do you want one?

Hey

yes its true, Ive read his books, and I think Derren Brown has an unique style that I really appreciate.

I actually have a friend who owns that dice. he performs it in his Magic Bar. I think it is a really nice trick to perform when you're a mentalist.

Im not a very experienced magician, you were right about that. Im still learning a lot. still testing a lot of things out and stuff.. :)

but that dice trick is really amazing, my friend said he had someone built one for him back in california.

Since i dont have any knowledge on how to build one.. i dont know where to get it.

what do you think?

I don't have time for a full answer, but really, if you're just getting into this sort of thing, it's way too much money to spend. I've been doing magic for over 30 years, and I'd have to seriously think about it before buying.

Have a look at the 'sticky' posts on the forum, which give you ideas on ways of starting as a magician and a mentalist.

I believe I can get them and if I'm not mistaken they cost about $350 USD.

Wow, as cheap as that?!?!

:)

I'm sure I had a link to a similar item (but my Magic folder in Favorites is groaning at the seams). I'll see if I can find it (pretty sure it was cheaper than $350 - $200 rings a bell). However, would you prefer to pay (say) £100 for one trick, or buy a few good books, or a Richard Osterlind or Banachek DVD set and get lots more stuff, plus advice on presentation?

Let me know if you really want me to look. :wink:

Hocus Pocus do a colour cube version for about £100. Other versions with the large die are much more expensive.

Tim Wisseman makes them - very good. They sell for about $200 on Hocus Pocus - there is asmall pocket size one and a slightly (but not much) bigger one. There is also a version that uses numbers instead of colours (yes, like a die).

Just out of interest - are you aware there is a totally non gimmicked version as well?

I keep reading "die in box" and I keep thinking of Schroedinger's cat...

Just thought I'd mention it. Carry on.

As your just starting out maybe just getting die cypher at the lower price would be easier or learning a few basic methods for doing envelope and billet predictions. A little bit more detail about yourself and what books, tricks, etc you currently use may help.

DrTodd and bananafish have saved me another search. That's the one I was thinking of.

Die Cypher and Colour Vision are similar, but not the same. Personally, I'd prefer something that isn't going to break. Viking and Mikame both do wooden versions. I've got the MIkame one, and it's nice (although I actually bought it to implement a Docc Hilford idea). I'd love to be able to understand the Mikame instructions!

The Mikame looks nice and Bananafish seems to approve...may have to interrogate him later :twisted:

thnx fellas,

it is kind of expensive i guess...

but its so cool because you can tell them everytime without even looking at the objec,t i would love to have a trick like that, with die cypher you still have to do something or look at it, you even give them a chance to figure it out.

You guys know something that might suit me, in the same style as that die in box?

I think im going to order the die cypher, but theres something bothering me, ive seen this at a friends house and he told me how it works, but you still have to touch it, but on the website where i want to order the die cypher, they claim that you dont even have to touch it, just look at it.

is this a different version or..? im not fishing or anything, i truly know how it works but im just wondering if there is a difference? the one my friend had really looked the same as the die cypher, but he called it different, i dont know anymore :)

could someone pm me the difference if there is any? or just give me a hint or tip on how it might work, is it true you really never even have to touch it at all?? that would be really amazing.

someone recommended me another trick as well; divining rods,

i dont know how this one works. is it similair to die cypher? ive seen someone perform it, but i cant figure it out. seems also really good.

thank you guys for helping out.

here is the website of the die cypher i wanted to order;

http://www.magicproshop.com/die-cipher- ... -6937.html

and on this website they give that description of the die cyper 2; that you dont even have to touch it... ;X confused ;X

here is the website of the color rods;

sorry i havent answered your questions

Im 21 years old

Reading Absolute magic - Derren Brown, Books of wonder - Tommy Wonder

Also reading some Card tricks books.

I love simple strong stuff, not too many gimmicks or sleight of hands.

id rather do close up. I can handle coins and cards pretty good.

I have a nice cigarette routine which im proud of :) copied from cyril takayama but changed a few things here and there.

i love impromptu magic, or pocket magic. small things that you can take with you; coins, cigarettes, a little metal dice and a little metal box perhaps :)

those things I like. I have a rather serious approach about magic. i dont talk a lot. i dont deal with balloons or ropes.

my dream is to travel around the world, and take my magic with me in my small magic bag, so im searching for good strong portable magic.

..that sounded weird haha, good strong portable magic

i live in asia at the moment, not a lot of magic going on here... also difficult to come in touch with other magicians, or even magic books..

most of the stuff they sell on websites i dont even know or never heard of.

its a good thing that some tricks still keep me wondering.
