OOTW using the Gilbreath Principle

Postby Magnus » Aug 25th, '08, 12:51

Rumors have reached me that there's a version of OOTW out there which is based on the Gilbreath Principle.

Is anyone of you aware which one of the dozens of different OOTW it is? Grant? Harris? Lorayne? Maven? ... I'm lost.

Cheers,
Magnus

From memory (and thats always a dangerous starting point) Lennart Green has done some work on this.

I'm no expert in all the different types, but I think both the Harris and Lorayne versions use genuine riffle shuffles.

However, my understanding is that they do not use the Gilbreath principle in its true form. I don't know the Lennart Green work pdjamez mentions.

Does anyone know in which volume of Paul Harris' "Arts of Astonishment 1-3" one can find his OOTW version ("Galaxy")?

I read somewhere in this forum, that Galaxy is really easy done in combination with a stripper deck... does it REQUIRE a stripper deck, or is it just an option?

Thanks,
Magnus

His version of OOTW "Galaxy" is in volume 3. You can see what tricks are inside his books from THIS LINK, scroll down about half way down the page.

why anybody would want to do o.o.t.w using the gilbrieth principle, is beyond me.

I still find that Curry's original method is the best.

Eugene Burger has a great slant on this in his latest DVD

Gordon Bean has a version published in Genii - called "Splitting the difference" (if memory serves) that uses the gilbreath principle (well partially anyway).

Splitting the Difference itself was based on someone elses effect - I will have to check to see who.

This is actually one of my favourite variations and is very nice indeed. Very very nice.

There is a self working version of OOTW called "out Of this Universe" which works by the gilbreath principle or something very similar to.

It's certainly one of those effects in which you try it out for the first time and the outcome surprises you

... I see... sounds promising!

I'm thinking about ordering Paul Harris' "Arts of Astonishmens", vol. 3 at the moment. I find the idea that the spectator can shuffle the deck appealing - however, as I have asked earlier in this thread: does this version REQUIRE a stripper deck, or is it just easier to do with one? I don't like strippers (decks! - not the ones with negotiable affections) too much... ;)

Galaxy is based on Paul Curry's version and Mr. Harris just trimmed it up a bit to provide a tighter performance.

Yes, there is an option of shuffling the cards but the outcome may not be perfect. However, there is a proper approach to this. All cards are legit...I don't like Stipper Decks that much as well :)

Out of this universe is completely hands off as far as being the magician and requires the spec to shuffle and deal (under instruction of course).

I hear what you chaps say, but with a stripper, you can still thoroughly shuffle, have the spectator shuffle and inspect the deck, re-shuffle it yourself fro good measure - including a Hindu strip to get it into the right order - and then begin OOTW. The whole thing looks as innocent as a baby polar bear sat nibbling a stick of celery when the animal rights people call at his iceberg to ask about all the dead seals...

I use the one Penguin magic are selling, not sure if this is anywhere near the original or not but gets great reactions.

Lennart Green lets the spec deal two random piles of cards and in a couple of motions, separates the two packets into reds and blacks.

Derren Brown's is one of the best i have ever seen. The card exchanges are just brilliant.
